Seems like we could take this one of a few ways:

1) A retread like BB who has had some success.....and some failures. Not my preference.

2) Solid coach who is still working way up.....but has shown they can develop talent. Can they recruit? LL or Monken.

3) Flyer on the up and comer....young head coach or Coordinator that has had some success and shown ability to recruit. Freeman, Lewis, etc.

Really don’t want the retread.....just had Lovie. Can’t imagine Meyer, Gus or Stoops having any interest.

Let’s go category 2 or 3......either the solid coach that will develop players and be prepared to play. Or....young coach that will bring in talent and some excitement. Either is upgrade over last 5+ years.

Is it far fetched to think the new coach can win 5 games his first year to go 5-7? Non-conference schedule looks to be UTSA, Charlotte, and Virginia. Not sure how Virginia will be next year, so maybe that's two wins there (possibly three). Then find a way to win two or three games in conference. Is that impossible? Point being, if we can manage 5 wins, it won't feel like such a painful rebuild.

Good point...just don't like the idea of another " up n comer" from small school. Prefer someone established in the P5 as either HC, OC, DC or similar. Can't take a safe chance pick, clock is ticking, we are so far, far behind...we need to think aggressive
How about a bright, young up and comer from a small school with a little experience at a P5, too. Is there a 2020/2021 version of Eli Drinkwitz out there? Still early but it looks like Mizzou may have hit a home run. Please JW....hire a guy who is always one of the smartest guys in the room.

I can't stand mizzou, but man, Drinkwitz is a really good coach and very likeable. Kind of makes me want to throw up since its mizzou.

Not thrilled with the idea of Leipold, but do not hate it either. I have listened to several interviews with him and have been impressed with his demeanor. Much better than our last MAC coach. Lasagna!

Finally listened to this, came off much better to me than TV interview he did. Very likable. Also, something he said when asked why did he take the Buffalo job, when advised against it, (paraphrasing) "I wanted to take a challenge of building a program at a place people said it couldn't be done". Where is the Risky Business Tom Cruise pick when you need it?

At the time he was hired, Self was THE hot young coach on the market. He had won big at a mid-major, very charismatic. Not sure about the charisma piece, but otherwise sounds like Fickell to me

Why are they announcing at 1 on Sunday? There is a basketball game on and no one will care. Maybe this is how they are going to dump disappointment on us.

Loved the Self hire..was under the radar pick because less internet chatter back then. He had a great BB mind..loved listening to him in interviews. Smart and quick witted.

Huge risks imply that there is something we could lose. With a program as bad as Illinois football for the past four decades, how big of a risk can it be short of a massive scandal?
The risk is we find ourselves in the same spot five years from now. I’m convinced an experienced power 5 coach would at least have us competing and bowl eligible during the next five years and we’d have a stronger base.

I'm probably delusional but still holding out hope for Fickell. Hoping we just catch him at the right time where he has pretty much done all he can do at Cincy and he is ready to make a move and wants to coach in the B1G.
I'm going to join you on the delusional team until the announcement lol

Where did you read the announcement from UI that this was happening?

If looking young up and comer with great success, did we call Joe Brady?? OC with NC Panthers this year.....OC with LSU last year. 2019 Broyles award winner......only 31.
