I'm still haunted by the line in the Monken article about hiring "a good coach that will go to Illinois to die." That has to be a consideration in potential coaches choosing Illinois. An up-and-coming-coach has to worry that taking the job is one step forward, and two steps back (when it's over). Of course, you want to hire a guy with the confidence that they can turn around the program...so, a guy worried about failing is a bad candidate anyway, I guess.

When his son is done at OU, then he could come here and be the DC.
no , we should have him come here right now , pay the lads tuition differential between instate v outstate, and give Bob 12 r/t flights on donors jet to Norman from Champaign

Isn’t that what lovie did? And maybe unknowingly Zook, and Beckman. I think Zooks assisstants have fared alright though.

I took a leak next to Billy Self back when he was coach at 02 Main, before it was Guido's. I should point out, since some might ask, that it was in the bathroom in the urinal next to him. True story.
Bill Self never coached 02 Main! HAHAHAHA!

All claims that there is a hire, or type of hire, or amount of money to spend on a hire, that doesn't have a substantial, probably 50% or more risk of leaving us right back here in five years is incorrect, full stop. Being a program like Illinois is inherently a glide path to failure. It's climbing up a greased pole. That's what makes it fun! That's why it means more when we win than when Ohio State does!
C'mon, Gritty. Wisky sucked for 30 years before they hired Alvarez. Northwestern was the doormat of the league from its founding until Barnett came along. If those two programs can become perennial respectable, so can Illinois.

Of course we CAN. But the odds are against us.

I find that a lot more fun and a lot more emotionally compelling than pro sports that relentlessly pushes bad teams upward, punishes good teams for their success, and general just leaves you with a product where everyone is basically the same.

Every NFL game is like 27-21, it's so boring.

Made me remember a similar "brush" with greatness except it was Jim McMahon in 1985 at the Rose Bowl in Urbana before they went to the Superbowl.
In 1989 I bumped into Jim McMahon in a beer garden in Munich, Germany.
We ended up having a beer and shooting the breeze for about 30 minutes.

In 1985 my mother was the banquet mgr at Jumers Castle Lodge where the Bears stayed while practicing in the bubble at U of I. I didn't work there but I came and worked a breakfast anyway. Spilt Buddy Ryan's coffee, lol, served sweetness also. My sister showed McMahon around town and I got a pair of his sunglasses and 2 autographed footballs. Still have them, oh to be 20 something again.

New twist on an old joke: the 4 most popular sports at Illinois are:
1) Basketball
2) Basketball recruiting
3) Football coaching seraches
4) Football
Superbly done!

And very true when we have football seasons with just two wins. However, in the hey-dey of Illini sports in my lifetime (the 1980's), football actually slots-in as a tie for first at #1. It's soooooooooo much darned fun to be good.........and to be ranked in the Top 15........and to be featured routinely as the Big 10 game-of-the-week!!

I can recall a couple of weeks in November(s) where just 2 schools were AP/UPI ranked in both football and basketball....Illinois and perhaps Boston College if I recall correctly.

The risk is we find ourselves in the same spot five years from now. I’m convinced an experienced power 5 coach would at least have us competing and bowl eligible during the next five years and we’d have a stronger base.
I agree the coach must come from a power 5 program or prove they can recruit at a high level. LL can't recruit. His team was near the bottom of the division in recruiting.

Allen Green, the Auburn AD was hired from Buffalo. Leipold was hired by Green at Buffalo. Don’t be surprised if Leipold is introduced at Auburn Sunday or Monday.
I will be very surprised if that happens. Shocked. They didn’t fire Gus Malzahn to hire Leipoid. Their fans would be in an uproar. They care about one thing. Winning. And they have no problem hiring a scumbag if he is a proven winner. I think the record is crystal clear on that.

Right, but I find it funny they say Steele is the leading candidate.
