I noticed that too. I actually went down a little Iowa State rabbit hole seeing as how we recruited and lost several players to them. To wit:

JCL- really highly rated out of HS, maybe the highest rated recruit Groce landed? Had a great freshman year for us at 42% from 3, and I think broke Bradford’s record for 3’s by a freshman. But hasn’t come anywhere close to that level of success since.

George Conditt- Started 7 games last year as a sophomore and averaged 7 and 5. Appears to play a limited role as an upperclassman

Zion Griffin- transferred to UIC. Averaging 9 ppg so far.

Both Conditt and Griffin were considered big misses by the staff. Neither has really panned out. We wound up settling for some 2 star kid who was mainly known for dribbling around chairs. Makes you wonder why we follow recruiting at all!
I haven’t seen Conditt play at Iowa State. But based on his high school highlights, I thought his value to a college team would be his ability to switch and recover on defense and rebound out of his area. He looked like a very fluid athlete for a big, but I never saw him turning into a scorer. I have no idea if he has shown those abilities at Iowa State. But his numbers may not tell the whole story.

Always wondered if considered big misses by staff or just this board. It seems the stars are more valued here than by the staff.
I dont think yhey pay attention to recruiting srrvice "stars". They do their own evaluations That being said most of the key players they go after are 4 or 5 star guys. Especailly as our program and stance has improved

I realize the super early mock drafts can be a bit silly, but Ayo is listed as a 1st rounder in just about all of em. If he continues to play the way he's playing, I don't see him going outside of the 1st round.

I was surprised BBV didn't get any tick vs Duke, and didn't hear anything about him after game.
last i heard was bbv was limited mins in practice...doubt he has been cleared for games yet....long season...he will be valuable in B1G

And I haven't seen Kofi in any of the mock drafts I have looked at.

Unless he magically develops a 40% 3pt jumper and transplants his flippers for actual hands, he has no chance of being drafted this season.
Maybe Kofi printed my post out before this Minnesota game and pinned to his bulletin board! Looks like a totally different player today.

I know it's been said about 1000 times since Kofi committed, but it's a shame he wasn't born 15 years earlier. He's someone who probably would've been a top 10 pick last year and even higher this year, if that was true.

BU claims he's got a 3 pt shot. I'd love to see him jack one.

I think I remember at some point BU also was asked whether he'd give Kofi the green light to take a 3, and he kind of chuckled and said no. Then revised it to, maybe 1 a game if the team is up by a lot. So I can't imagine it's a particularly *good* 3 pt shot.

Maybe equivalent to Giorgi’s and he is 100%.

What is the consensus on Trent and Damonte returning? How does that alter our current recruiting path?
Kofi...he is fire and ice, will he return? I admittedly don't watch NBA, it bores me to death, but is/will he be an NBA type?

I've been sucked into the football coach search so its probably already been answered on here. Has anyone heard anything new about Hutcherson? Last I heard he was in California getting back treatment. I have a sinking feeling we are never going to see him play a game.

Last I heard is we might not see him play this year, back issues that have come and gone for years after a bad carwreck.

Was thinking about Kofi tonight watching NBA Mavericks vs Timberwolves. Both teams’ centers combined made 6 three pointers in the first half. Kofi just doesn’t fit into NBA skills set yet. I loved his dominance against the Gophers, but he can’t do that in the bigs.

He can play for Bulls. Wendell Carter is 1-12 from 3 thus far, and I don’t think Gafford shoots many if any.

DeAndre Jordan doesn't shoot 3s...but he has had a very successful career since 09. DJ is not quite as big as Kofi, but clearly NBA have spots for guys like DJ and KC.

Deandre Jordan moves around the court in every direction like a 7 foot gazelle and plays 3 feet above the rim.

Kofi moves well in a straight line, not as well laterally, and plays more at the rim than above the rim, which truthfully can be a tough look for a 7’2 guy.

he did show the best touch, balance, array of finishes and footwork I’ve ever seen out of him vs. minny though so it’s possible it’s clicked for him a bit. I thought even ignoring his gigantic overall numbers his game was extremely impressive.

I agree. I think Kofi needs to do a couple of things to reach the next level. The first is to be stronger with the ball. Going up for a dunk should not get blocked. He needs to snap someone's hand off. You also saw a small guard swat the ball out of his hands. This is something that he is very capable of doing he just needs to show it in a game.

The second is to know when to pass out of the post. If the play is not there, get it out of there instead of forcing it. I admit that in the Minny game when they pushed him out he handled that much better. He slowed down, let the defenders clear out, and actually hit several baby hooks. That being said, if you have three defenders converge on you, someone is wide open. In the NBA he will have to feed the three-point shooters or sit on the bench.

Finally, he will have to venture out from under the basket to defend. In my opinion, this will be what he will have to work on the most and it won't be a quick fix. It's why he might not be ready for the draft this year. If he can't defend the perimeter he won't be on the floor.

I doubt that he will ever be an outside threat on offense, but some NBA team can figure out how to use him. I personally think if he takes care of the first thing he would be a monster at that level. His advantage would be that NBA centers aren't used to having to deal with someone like him.

It's a shame. Griffin is clearly both a talented player and a headcase. It appears he has some other inherited traits that don't do him well in this realm.

Saw on Twitter that Alan’s mom wants him to transfer.

She needs a waiver rule where he can transfer after every game. :D

Just looking at his stats, he's doing well this year. His PER is down quite a bit from last year, but his minutes are up, and most of his stats are up similarly. Real shame he wasn't happy enough here to be part of this season, but wish him well.
