if BB blows up and has Illinois playing in B1G Championship games or something in a few years, Robinson then gets can become targeted as the new “hot” assistant in that scenario and can maybe better pick his landing spot as a HC if he is a successful recruiter here at UI (potentially)

At the coordinator level, "retreads" are what you want. Sometimes a superstar OC jumps up from a lower level, but in general, especially on defense, you want someone battle-tested.

This is a rough comp, but would this be similar to when Zook brought in Locksley at OC? Not necessarily great (or in Locksley's case, experienced) at the coordinator level but a great recruiter that pretty much requires the coordinator position to get him to Illinois?

Thanks for the info. I knew Locksley had never coordinated. I guess my question/point is that Robinson seems much more of a recruiter than a defensive mastermind. We aren't talking about the leader of one of the top defensive units in the country or even conference based on what little I've seen. Am I being unfair?

South Carolina's defenses have been really good under Muschamp. Robinson is both things.
Jim Chaney, Travaris Robinson, and straight up stealing Michigan's strength coach would be In. Sane.
Seems like a pipedream unless those guys are taking pay cuts. I guess Robinson could require less as he's currently unemployed, but he was over 1 mil at SC. Chaney makes like 1.6 mil, and according to a previous post, the S&C guy makes 700k.
I believe the article by Werner that talked about an increase in the salary for coaches, made note that Whitman said they were “committed to at least $5 million” for Bielema's coaching staff and there was another 2M for the rest of the support staff (including S&C).

Right. I guess my thoughts are more to budget. It would be pretty wild to steal the OC and S&C guys away from Michigan and Tennessee. Then we'd have to pay them, I'd assume, at least their current salary, probably more. You're looking at a good 3-3.5 mil for just 3 guys. That leaves 3.5-4 mil for the remainder of the staff and support staff, 8 coaches and probably 15-20ish support staff?
