Looks like Ash (could be) staying with Texas

It's kinda unbelievable how silent everything has been, including the coaching search proper.
They're doing a pro job keeping the leaks to nothing, that's for certain. The Illini fan in me wonders if that's because the negotiations are very back and forth and nothing is coming easily. At some point you have to trust in your AD and new head coach to just do the best that they're capable of and make peace with it all. The silence has become deafening.

It really is intriguing that both of his former Defensive Coordinators at one time or another in Ash and Rhoades became available recently. Honestly, I think best case scenario we land Ash at DC and Rhoades is secondary coach. Definitely have some flexibility between a 4-2-5 and 3-4 with those guys.

Are there any young coordinators on the screen at all? I could still see them landing a vet like Rhoades on the staff.

I really wish they could land Mike Tressel but I just don't see that move. Been at MSU for a long time, has a small connection to Tucker and already makes real good money.

If muschamp to texas really happens and ash is out..are we the best gig for him? I know he’s been my favorite dc candidate but I just figured that’s been a pipe dream..

Best, probably not. Even with how the transfer market is this year our defense isn't going to be great next year. With Ash probably trying to move up again a down year with a multi-year project with no promise of success probably isn't ideal. He might do it if he and BB are tight, but not his best career move.

Michigan is out there looking for a DC - I would have said JH’s shaky ground might make it less appealing to a guy like Ash who just saw his HC fired after his first year at UT, who may be looking for stability- which we offer. But it looks like the latest news is UM is looking to extend JH to 2026

Ash doesn’t have any obvious ties to JH and they can cast a wide net in the NFL and college to get their guy, so hopefully we’re not competing with Michigan for Ash right now

I will say no news up till now is likely good news- if BB was going to hire Rhoades or Partridge as DC we likely would have heard it by now- this timing suggests BB may be waiting for the UT situation to resolve itself if he’s prioritized Ash (which he should have)

The thing that makes me hesitate about Ash isn’t the money, or even BB. Just look at the last 2 dc jobs he took. OSU and Texas. There is no shortage of talent at those schools. Sure he may have been changing the scheme but he had the players already there. That would not be the case here barring like an entire starting lineup of transfers. It’s just a very difficult situation to step into. He’s good enough where he doesn’t have to take a rebuild job if he doesn’t want to.

Excellent point. I'd get my $$$ guaranteed by Bret and Josh before signing any paperwork here.

So lets just rule Ash out for now. Who would our dc options be? Someone who coached yesterday? Is it an nfl guy since its week 17?

He was an assistant at NE before being promoted to DL coach and then coached Linebackers at NY. If he had influence over anyone leaving the NFL for Illinois it would be one massive reach of a promotion.

Well I don't have any names but I'm guessing it'll be either someone with moderately successful experience calling D or someone young that Bret was high on from his previous stops at Ark/Wiscy. He said he would be involved with the D if I recall so it will be someone he has probably worked with before.

I don’t agree with this logic- you mean we wouldn’t take a DC from Alabama or Ohio St because they had too much talent to work with? Ash was at Wisconsin before those schools and had top defenses there before getting the OSU job- you don’t get the big time jobs without showing success with lesser talent first- Ash has proven himself as a DC over and over again

He’s getting $4.3M over the next two years from Rutgers and Texas so money won’t be the issue.

Your point on if he wants a rebuild situation is the right question, that’s what it boils down to - and his relationship with BB

I’m assuming we’re waiting for Bill Belichick’s season to be over in NE - given BB’s connection there and he’ll want to return to his roots as a DC and live a simpler life 😂

Northwestern also filling a DC position. Will that be from within the program - like maybe Tim McGarigle? That would be ironic. I assume he had something to do with their LB development and play

Maybe I worded it weird. I meant he might not want to take our job. He’s been able to take better jobs with better talent. He could be picky on where he wants to be dc. Obviously we’d be crazy not to want him here.

I believe there was talk that they alresdy had a replacement in house. Would be in line with Fitz's MO.

Fitz has stated he will entertain NFL offers...his time at NW could be coming to an end
