Disagree - when we beat Purdue last year, plenty of people were royally ticked off at Griffin for his Laettner stomp. Ish like that has no place on the court. There's a line and Sissoko absolutely crossed it. Repeatedly. BU handled the Griffin situation wildly better than Izzo handled this one.

And even if you coach your players with "we're going to be physical", "no easy buckets", "its going to be a street fight"... you better trust that they know where the line is. And that line is well before swinging at a players head... after the whistle.... and after he no longer has the ball. This is in no way a basketball play. Its the same logic as calling for fouls at the end of the game. You want them to reach in, but they can't go throwing hip checks.

Both plays were bad but let's not put this on the same level as Griffin last year. That was bush league plain and simple (and clearly malicious) and he went into Brad's permanent doghouse because of it. I'm sure we would all like to think Sissoko did that on purpose but I don't think so. I think he was playing like he was told to play which is very very very physical.

Keep in mind, he's a freshman that is still very raw. I find it hard to believe he meant to hurt Ayo but it's very clear he was told to be rough with us.

I mean he is getting up there... maybe he's just that confused and thought it was late 80's since short shorts are coming back in style. But yeah, if you spun up a poll I'd probably vote it was as intentional as Sissoko's fouls on Ayo and Kofi.
I would be surprised if he said 'next time Ayo drives, crush him in the face so hard it breaks his nose' but I have no doubt he said 'if you're going to foul, foul them hard and make sure they can't get a shot up' and probably also said 'rough em up' and then definitely said after the game that he was "proud" of his guys and the way they played. So either way, the end result is the same and the coach is openly pleased with that type of play. And he'll keep on encouraging that play since he was rewarded with a win and faced no real consequences. That's messed up.

Possibly a player of the year having to miss games because of a dirty play. Thanks a lot Izzo and the Big Ten
The officials are to blame. If they would have called the F1 on the kid with the hit across the head, this kid might have not been on the floor at the time but hard to tell. But the officials not calling the F1 made this kid think he was able to do anything.

Playing physical means different things to different people. How do you think the situation would have played out if that was Xavier Tillman instead? Probably would have been different.

Do I think Sissoko took time to think, "I'm going to hurt this MF'er"? No. But if he's so green that he doesn't know that hitting a player in the air, in the head, after he's no longer in possession of the ball, AND AFTER THE WHISTLE is likely to result in an injury (I can't believe I'm typing this in a basketball thread and not a football thread), then he needs to be suspended until he can demonstrate he's learned that lesson.

This very clearly wasn't a basketball play. It was absolutely, I'm going to take a shot after the whistle here to be "PHYSICAL". Maybe because college kids think there invincible, the possibility of an injury didn't occur to him. That's the most charitable case that can be made.

Yea, no. Both plays were bush league. Anybody who has played more than 3 basketball games in their life knows you do not go into a player's head swinging both arms downward. He was told to be physical and he took it over the line. Plain and simple.

The damning part is how -- on both plays but especially on Ayo's drive, given where the ball is -- he brings his arms all the way from straight up to straight down at his side, swiping at Kofi's head and Ayo's face in the process. The first thing a big man is taught on defense is go straight up or else its a foul. So at the very least he knew he was fouling and did it as hard as possible, or (more likely imo) he knew he was fouling and wanted to make sure he made it fully 'count' by hitting the part of the body that will hurt the most.

Never heard of this Marty Mush guy. I’ll wait to hear from official Illinois sources to say if true, and if so how long he’ll be out.
He's a pretty big guy with Barstool. Not the best source but its not some rando either.

I am thinkin that stepping on another player while on the floor, is a little different than a hard foul. Players get hit in the head often, they rarely get stepped on.
