Out for both games this week.

We will see maked Ayo for Michigan Tuesday night

Our freshmen guards won't be able to play like freshmen and keep us on the 2 seed line. Time for Ace to get loose, and Dre to tighten it up. If they don't, its going to be a long week.

Thanks to everyone that responded. That all makes sense.

I broke my nose in college during practice. We had a game 2 nights later and I played with a mask. With that said, we dont know how bad his broken nose is but my doctor said i had a pretty good break that didnt require surgery. I got fitted for a mask and had it by the next game. I am no expert but I really dont see how Ayo couldn't get a mask for tonight even if he couldn't play, it should be ready if he is able to play. Hopefully without Ayo tonight, it can be an easy win. GO ILLINI

This certainly stinks and I know lots of people catching up to the news this morning.

I think the time out depends on
1. How bad the break
2. Timing of surgery

For a minor break, a mask and waiting might be totally fine. For a worse break, it might mean more immediate surgery + recovery time, then masked. That might mean he’s in for the BTT or just the NCAA tourney. It would certainly stink to miss the rest of the regular season, especially his last home game, but dude needs to do what can be done to get healthy.

last couple thoughts:
- I think the team comes out rightfully pissed and tries their best tonight on senior night without Ayo. Hopefully this loss doesn’t deflate them. An Ayo-less team can beat Nebraska.

- I am not as sure if an Ayo-less Illini could win our last 3, however. It’s possible but certainly a tall order. Let’s say we go 1-2, 0-3 at worst. Does that put us fairly in the 3 seed. But then we have him back and can hopefully play above our seeding and make some madness.

- Masked Ayo just makes him closer to the superhero we all know he is 😂🦹🏾‍♂️

Get well soon, Dos 🙏

MSU has 3 games left against the two teams most likely to pull #1 seeds in the NCAA. The B1G really needs to put on their thinking caps and consider the consequences of not putting their feet down now. They don't and they are risking something even worse than losing a NPOY candidate on a FF contender.

I get it. He has been fitted for the mask. I just know he had surgery on it so I am not sure if the two games is because the surgery and they are being cautious or because it is up to him with pain tolerance.

I'm curious what surgery means for a broken nose. Do they stick something up there or are they opening the nose up. Is he under or awake?

Calling any doctors on this board...

guessing they are being cautious that he is right for the last two....those games are massive

Yea, no. Both plays were bush league. Anybody who has played more than 3 basketball games in their life knows you do not go into a player's head swinging both arms downward. He was told to be physical and he took it over the line. Plain and simple.
I get this, but they play was happening at full speed. If the ball isn't poked out before Sissoko is there, then Sissoko is making all his contact with the ball and Ayo's arms. He obviously had intent to foul hard, but I'm not going to infer that he had intent to slam Ayo in the face.

It is shocking that the Illinois medical staff cleared Dosunmu to play the final 4:08 with a broken nose that is so significant that he now faces significant health risk were he to play w/o a mask and may miss several games going forward. It appears their examination was cursory and the decision to permit Ayo to continue was medically incorrect and potentially dangerous. No excuse and indefensible. This situation needs to be reviewed so it doesn't happen to another UI athlete moving forward. Get well Ayo.

Call me paranoid, but I think Izzo knows what a monster our program is when it’s humming and wouldn’t be the least bit upset if our best chance for a deep tourney run in 15+ years gets submarined. I mean his immediate goal obviously was to win the game and get to the tourney, but if he takes out our all American in the process, all the better.

Izzo, you’ve officially made the list, buddy.

Can someone else more informed than me explain if a broken nose really can keep a player out that long? I feel like I've heard of players playing with a broken nose (and a mask) pretty quickly after the injury.
I don't think he can wear a mask until the swelling goes down at a minimum. I can easily see the missing two games.

If there is an orbital bone issue or a more serious nose break that needs surgery then out until the BTT makes sense.

I mean they couldn't whisk him off to get an x-ray lol. How were they suppose to know it was a break after the game?

I don't understand posts like this. Obviously Izzo went in the the mindset of playing a physical game. I can't imagine Izzo telling Sissoko to take out our best player so we can't make a tourney run and have sustained success. Let's think reasonably here.

We can beat Nebraska without Ayo, but that Wisconsin game will be tough. Going to need some exceptional 3pt shooting on Sat.

On the plus side, these two games could be a good opportunity for others to step up and realize they can continue to contribute offensively even after Ayo is back.
Thank you for being so positive. We need more of it. That said, there's no plus side here. Ayo for NPOY or even BTPOY is done, Nebraska is playing well and it took 15 straight from Ayo @ Nebraska to win a squeaker(I'm sure they fully believe they can win), he dominated the game with a triple double vs Wisconsin to win that game and it's pretty much a fact that when he plays well, they play well and when he struggles, they struggle. Not sure where they're going to make up for 21 PPG, 7 APG and a rock solid foul shooter down the stretch. Then, we he does come back, it's @Michigan and @ OSU. This could be an 0-5(including the MSU loss) end of the regular season...which would most likely result in the not getting the double bye.

All THAT said, maybe I'm overstating his importance and they'll roll NE and play real well in Madison.

They simply cannot afford a loss tonight.

There are a lot of things this team doesn't do well but they will rally around their All American. I would expect nothing less than a 30 point win tonight.
