To put anything on the Illinois medical staff is ludicrous.
If he didn't show symptoms of a concussion, there was no reason to keep him out. It is often difficult to tell if a nose is broken without imaging.

A lot of cases of players doing very well with masks. Honestly can't think of too many cases where it drastically effects a players game.
Yeah. I know that Rip Hamilton basically got so used to it that he kept it on long after his nose injury. I can't think of the specific player(s) but I know I have seen players just ditch the mask due to visibility/comfort/whatever and play with the risk of reinjury. Not to downplay the injury at all, but the nose is maybe the only broken bone you can play with and a reinjury wouldn't really set you back significantly. It would just be repaired the same way.

Yep. 9 minutes, 3 fouls, no other stats. At least 3 instances of violent actions: hard foul on Giorgi posting up, hitting Kofi's head, Ayo's nose. That's either taught or just his style of play, and he needs to be reprimanded for it. This isn't just chippy, annoying stuff like Griffin and Davison had a bit of a history with, this is dangerous, reckless play. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he is actually trying to hurt people, but he is definitely playing with complete disregard to others' safety.
Certainly seems like Izzo put him in to be an ‘enforcer’ knowing that him fouling out wouldn’t impact anything.

Morsell for Maryland is a good example...he missed about a week of action and then came back. Hoping the same for ayo, as a week would be the Michigan game

BIG10 needs to suspend him for at least 2 games and certainly any game vs ILL in the big 10 tournament

It is is shown that Izzo sent it a player with the intent to injure one or our players I will be the first to demand reprircussions. But it is a rough game. Players drive the basket with extreme strenght and speed. KC takes a beating almost every game. The Michigan player made a hard foul, I am not convinced there was intent to do bodily harm. He was ejected.
I think we get your stance ion this.

Can someone else more informed than me explain if a broken nose really can keep a player out that long? I feel like I've heard of players playing with a broken nose (and a mask) pretty quickly after the injury.
I broke my nose taking an elbow in a pickup basketball game as a student. Went to the clinic right away but they said I had to let it 'heal' for a few days before out-patient surgery. They put me under and reset it (basically re-broke it). To avoid that, I would've had to reset it almost immediately after the incident, from what they told me. It was sore for a while, black eyes, took a couple weeks to heal. Definitely felt it whenever I ran or jumped.
All that said, I wasn't a D1 athlete and all-American candidate in the middle of a season. I'm sure the medical attention Ayo gets will be a little better than mine, and a little more expedient.

I get it. He has been fitted for the mask. I just know he had surgery on it so I am not sure if the two games is because the surgery and they are being cautious or because it is up to him with pain tolerance.
okay. I wasn't sure if he had surgery for sure or not. Thanks for the info.

I'm curious what surgery means for a broken nose. Do they stick something up there or are they opening the nose up. Is he under or awake?

Calling any doctors on this board...
My nose was broken in two places, a deviated septum. They put me under and put what looked like a tuning fork up my nose to 're-break' it to set it properly. No cutting.

Two issues with a broken nose and face mask that I have not seen discussed.
1. How will he adapt to playing with a mask? It could affect his visibility. It could also be a mental thing until he gets used to it.
2. Is there any impact to his breathing? The broken nose and/or surgery could restrict his ability to breathe.

Finally, if he is out for a time, how does that affect his game conditioning?
I'm guessing that he's able to continue conditioning, but it's the potential of getting hit in the face again that's the concern.... especially if surgery was involved. The big picture is the NCAA Tournament. No sense in risking a setback that would put that in jeopardy. The chance to win the Big Ten regular season ended Tuesday. These last four games are for tournament (Big Ten and NCAA seeding). Best to be cautious, live with the results and focus on the big picture.

I think Kobe, Lebron, Kyrie have worn these protective masks. Can't remember if they played well with it or not.

Call me paranoid, but I think Izzo knows what a monster our program is when it’s humming and wouldn’t be the least bit upset if our best chance for a deep tourney run in 15+ years gets submarined. I mean his immediate goal obviously was to win the game and get to the tourney, but if he takes out our all American in the process, all the better.

Izzo, you’ve officially made the list, buddy.

Postpone all games until we can get back in basketball shape.
For one guy? We are incapable of playing if one guy isn't on the floor?
Guess what, he ain't gonna be there all season next "year".
Anyway, they are not going to move the date of the start of the B1G Tournament, so postponing at this point is futile.

I think they called it a common foul. Should have been a Flagrant 1. I think they gave him the benefit of the doubt and believed he was just trying to swipe at the ball (but missed horribly).
But the whistle had already blown. That is my biggest issue with it.

Noticed in Kedric Prince tweet he used phrase “facial injury” rather than broken nose. Wonder if that means anything?
