The Illini hit a grand slam 4 years ago by hiring BU to build the program. Perfect fit for the right program, he recruits only skilled, high character players who buy into the team concept, work hard, enjoy playing together, and make each other better. We did not know for sure he would deliver the results we have seen these past two seasons, but would not trade him now for any coach out there. Minnesota, Indiana, et al will not find his equal, so I feel good about out program going forward.

He made some hard choices along the way, putting culture over players. Not an easy thing to do in this era of 'win now', and even harder IMO with what he inherited. Been a long road, but lotta indications he's got it rolling downhill now. I'm not expecting a team this good every year for obvious reasons, but I think he'll bring a level of consistency that will make us happy, and get the SFC rockin. That said, THIS team is special. These guys are fun to watch, and they've come a long long way over the course of the season. Lotta credit to go around.

Spoke to a few IU boosters today. They both said out of all the elite names that are being tossed out there (Beard, Drew, Musselman, etc.)

Two names that people are not taking seriously enough: Travis Steele & Dane Fife.

Let's just say they were not happy...
I can imagine why their fan base isn’t taking those names seriously enough. How would either of those hires be an upgrade over Miller, not that that bar is set very high...?

Heard a funny remark from Laurence Holmes today about DePaul (who by the way according to Holmes are still the reigning national champs as they won the last game played in college hoops before the shutdown last year). He said a friend cleverly remarked to him that DePaul brought basketball back to Chicago. But they didn't bring basketball back to DePaul.

"Brad coming to IU would transcend the game of basketball in this state. It would be one of the most significant cultural events the state has seen in quite some time."
it’ll be the biggest thing since the invention of the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich or popcorn

He's been pretty successful over there in Beantown. No way he leaves for Bloomington, right?

Has an employed NBA coach ever voluntarily left the NBA to go coach college basketball? And we’re not talking the Charlotte Hornets or Sacramento Kings here. We're talking about the head coach of the Boston freaking Celtics.

I'd imagine coaching in the NBA and especially coaching in Boston brings its fair share of issues. Dealing with NBA superstar personalities can probably get old depending on who you are. I don't follow the NBA much but aren't the Celtics sort of struggling this year with pretty much the same exact roster as last year?

Good old Slick Rick Pitino. Though I'm not sure his resignation wasn't actually a firing, but at face value...

The timing seems weird too. Indiana can't wait until the NBA season is over. Even on the off chance Stevens would leave Boston, it's hard to imagine him doing it in the middle of a NBA season. Celtics have been a little disappointing but still have a chance in the playoffs with Tatum and Jaylen Brown. And not sure Stevens would enjoy recruiting at the highest level. Maybe he would but the type of player Butler got is different than the ones IU fans want him to chase and all that goes with it.

Read an article a few years back about the difference between college and the pros from the coaching standpoint. The coach in question said from the end of the playoffs to the start of the next season, he got 2 phone calls from the teams front office. His wife told him he is never going back to college coaching. No alums to worry about and he got paid more.

Fife isn't the big name the IU fans want, but I think he could end up as one of the better choices.

Fair but what does Brad Stevens want to really achieve? Let's face it, he's not winning a title with the Celtics anytime soon given the landscape of the other teams in his way. If he is good with that then he probably sticks around.

My hot take here would be that he could lead IU to a Final Four sooner than he leads the Celtics to an NBA title.
