Gotta think Beard is their first choice. If he turns them down, it could get interesting. Underwood could be somewhere on their list but I don't see him really wanting to leave.

Think Beard ends up at UT but Brad will be on UT's short list for sure.
Yeah. Beard will demand A TON but probably end up taking it. The question is how far does Texas want to go? At some point they won't just keep raising the offer for Beard.

With Texas, Indiana, and Oklahoma all open, chance for some very interesting and consequential dominos.

Time to find out if Illinois is really the dream job that Brad said it was! I'd hate to see him leave for Texas, but at least I think we're in a better position to land a stud coach than we were before hiring Underwood.

wondering if Texas opening up expedites IU's hiring. They may have missed their window to possibly get Beard

There's also a good bit of differences between this potential situation and the Self one. Self was much younger than Brad, and Kansas >>>> Texas. Also, we won't shy away from trying to counter an offer to Brad and I don't think he would for sure leave for Texas the way Self was for sure going to leave for Kansas.

It's kind of crazy how much things have changed in one week. A week ago at this time, coming off an awesome OT BTT title, had not even played our first NCAA game, all the national analysts picking Illinois to go to the Final Four and some to win it all....and a week later, a loss that draws comparison to Austin Peay (never wanted to hear that name again in my life), recruiting highs and mostly lows, crazy transfer rumors, and now Texas wanting BU. In one week. What will the next week bring? Not sure I want to know.

Shaka is "controlling the narrative", which he does at a much higher level than he "coaches basketball".

I feel the excitement for my Marquette friends because he is/was a sought-after name, but I agree he isn't the greatest coach, unless you're cool with just getting to the tournament and maybe winning a game.

Shaka Smart NCAA tournament performance:

VCU
2010 :
2011 : Final Four (11 seed)
2012 : Round of 32 (12 seed)
2013 : Round of 32 (5 seed)
2014 : Round of 64 (5 seed)
2015 : Round of 64 (7 seed)

Texas
2016 : Round of 64 (6 seed)
2017 :
2018 : Round of 64 (10 seed)
2019 :
2020 : Covid year (BracketMatrix had them as 2nd team out of tourney)
2021 : Round of 64 (3 seed)

A week ago I had Texas and Illinois in the Final 4. They both disappointed and now who knows what the hell is going to happen lol.

Wow! I had no idea that Shaka had either missed the tourney or lost his first game for the last 7 years (disregarding last year's cancelled tournament). And 4 of the 5 losses were as the higher seed. Would have never guessed that.

Gonna be some fun musical chairs. People trying to connect Turgeon to OU and Beard to Texas, would still leave 2 P5 jobs open. Maryland, arguable a higher level job than OU. Texas Tech maybe not a super high profile job traditionally but been damn good under Beard and they are/were paying him very well. Gonna be a fun next month.
