I was totally bummed out when we lost last week. Now, after watching that disaster.....how did we lose to those guys?

The difference between today's game and the game against Illinois for Loyola? Fewer jumpers fell.....

....okay that's a major oversimplification. Oregon State actually had a more effective defensive scheme but it's hard not to chalk the results of this tourney up to complete randomness.

When you have the talent advantage that Illinois has, randomness shouldn't even enter the equation.

Scintillating hoops action. .59 PPP for Loyola in half #1. They were 1.127PPP vs IL. Krutwig looks like a middle aged insurance salesman in the weekend rec league so far.
I was thinking shower curtain hook salesman.

lol @ anyone who thinks Loyola wasn't underseeded because of 1 game today. They clearly had much better looks throughout the game but anything can happen in a single game. If the NBA playoffs were a single game last year the Lakers wouldn't of played more than 1 game.

Illinois forces the most mid range shots in college basketball, the least efficient shot. Those shots went in for Loyola but over a much larger sample size thats the much better defense than giving up open 3s like Oregon St did today. Although im still confused as to why Illinois didn't just switch the offball screens before the dribble handoff, would of killed the momentum and space the Loyola Ball handlers had.

Yep. Another embarrassment for Illinois. Losing badly to a team that lost to Oregon State. Bummer.
No offense to you personally, but I just think this is a tired take. This entire tournament is full “we lost to the team that lost to X”. Everyone feels like that at some point. Yeah, we lost. It sucked, no question. But as far as I’m concerned, we are no longer relevant in this whole narrative. It puts the bitter taste of that game in the past. Inserting ourselves into this game just seems silly.

Would be interesting to see what would have happened if Loyola was a 4 or 5 seed and we met them today vs. last week.

I think what happened is Loyola had a week to scout us, 2 weeks if they made the reasonable assumption that the NCAA would want a storyline and seed them in our bracket. They had plenty of time to find our kryptonite and used essentially 2 plays to beat us: 1. The double curl screen on offense and 2. Trapping Ayo on defense.

We had one day to prep against an 8/9 game which is basically a toss-up, meaning we had to devote resources equally to each team. If we face them in the round of 16, maybe we can spot some things and add some wrinkles for Loyola. Note, I don’t think we could have installed a zone defense in a week, but could have practiced switching, playing Krutwig straight up vs drop coverage, etc.

That being said, we should have been able to adjust to what they were doing in game and for whatever reason, just couldn’t do it. Still kills me they got us with essentially 2 plays.

I'm a part-time South Carolina fan and this Oregon State run kinda reminds me of SC's run four years ago (except that they were an at-large bid). Nobody saw it coming, but good for them and their fans, getting to enjoy the unexpected ride.

As far as the Illini are concerned...well, it's hard to feel any worse than I already did about losing to Loyola last weekend, so I don't have any problem relishing the Ramblers' demise just a little bit :sneaky:

Man, Oregon State tournament history over the past 30 years:

19905 WRound of 64(12) Ball StateL 53–54
20167 WRound of 64(10) VCUL 67–75
202112 MWRound of 64
Round of 32
Sweet Sixteen
(5) Tennessee
(4) #11 Oklahoma State
(8) #17 Loyola–Chicago
W 70–56
W 80–70
W 65–58
I think this just underscores how random the tournament has gotten over the past 10ish years.

There are one or 2 elite teams each year, but other than that the F4 path is pretty wide open and randomness takes over. Thus, the strategy should be to not necessarily build an elite team, but strive to consistently get in on the 3-7 line year in year out. Like the Cubs’ strategy a few years back, MLB postseason is so random, best odds are just to get in as much as possible.

We keep getting in consistently, our time to be the hot 5 seed that goes on a run will come. Particularly if we consistently have length and shooting which, I don’t think coincidentally, are 2 traits Underwood is currently coveting.

That was a pretty scary looking fall for Vital, but then he shook it off and returned to the floor.

The way I look at it - we will not have to hear about how Loyola beat us any more during this tourney. I they had survived, we'd continue to hear "And beat the #1 Seed Illinois" time and time again over the next week. Still hurts, but hope it rests.

Nova is really harassing Baylor without any relief. Giving the Bears lots of trouble. V Leads at the half, 30-23. Likely the game of the day.
