I’ve only loosely followed this thread but my impression is that the NBA benchmark is being used to demonstrate a player’s improvement over time, or an underutilization of his talent in college. I’m not sure it’s a baseline for being “good”.
Wagner a good example when compared to Ayo, Kofi, Liddell and many others.

How is this relevant? I was responding to someone saying they can't see Adam Miller in the NBA and contrasting that with Nunn after their freshman years, which is ridiculous since Nunn wasn't a clear NBA player after his senior year.
I agree with what your saying, just simply pointing out how tough it is to actually get drafted at all by an NBA team

Was Nunn drafted? ;)

Nunn was a UDFA and he has stated numerous times that not being drafted was a blessing in that it allowed him to work the best deal. Ironically that deal was with GSW and actually started him on his way. Being drafted in the last half of 2nd round is not good. Pigeon holes one into a poor negotiating position.

True. More the point I was making:

Just because one is in the NBA doesn’t mean there was a clear point that he showed pro potential.

And:

60 draftees per year =/= the only NBA players in a year.

Adam Miller as a Freshman averaged 8.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists. He is hardly on the NBA radar right now.

However,

He could make a huge jump next year as a Sophmore, something every college fanbase is telling themselves about their Freshman, soon to be Sophmore guard as well.

IMO I liked his defense and I do believe he is going to be a very good shooter. I was underwhelmed by his handle and his drive game. He did not get to the rim often and has a so-so first step. He is also pretty smallish, listed at 6'3" but doesn't play that big in my opinion.

I want Miller back, because I do still see a high ceiling and you can always use shooters. But I've also said, make up your mind, because he is not irreplacable and did not show that he is some can't miss NBA prospect last year. He still has a lotta work to do.

If you wanna play here, cool, then lets get to work. If not, we'll roll with Belo, Podz and hopefully Trent and Hutcherson can make an impact as well.

Good post. I don't want Miller to leave. But if he does, best believe staff is going to find a high caliber replacement for him.

Right. And how many of those 60 actually make a team? And out of that group, how many actually stick? Making The League is very, very difficult.

The average playing career in the NBA is 5.5 years. (I just looked it up.) If a player makes it past their first two years, then they stick just over 8 years on average. This means there are 70-80 new players in the NBA each year.

30 NBA teams
15 players per team roster (max 13 on the bench)
13/5.5 * 30 = 71
15/5.5 * 30 = 81

With the influx of foreign talent into the league, that number is significantly lower now for domestic players. May be as low as 40-45 depending on the year.
I was simply trying to say that Adam Miller has a LONG WAY to go to be K.Nunn in the hoops World.....I wish AM all the best regardless if he returns to OnB or not....I hope he does.

Good take. Last year, Miller wasn't put in a position to showcase his ability. That's not to say he didn't contribute, we just can't judge his potential based on his role. I almost think starting him hurt him. If he could have been groomed as the primary scorer when Ayo was on the bench, I think we would have seen a lot more out of him. Just really wish he'd come back and he and Curbelo take the reins.

I agree with both the you're take and the take you quoted. I also have to point out that Miller really played with effort and energy on the defensive side, that certainly improved as the year wore on and he proved to me that he was more then capable at guarding his position. I see a leap this year for sure. Just wish it could be for us.

Yeah, if Miller was 6'5, he would probably be in the draft despite a mediocre year this year in terms of shooting based on his shooting stroke, small glimpses of getting to mid range, and defense for a freshman. However, if he was 6'5 he could be a late lottery pick by showing more hesi dribbles, better at finishing, etc... The issue is he is 6'3 with not a great dribble/drive game (he has shown some flashes) in a league that really does not allow for 6'3 guards unless they are point guards, elite in either shooting or creating and he has handlers/whatever support in his ears most likely saying he was underutilized last year. He has a tough choice to make in that unless he drastically either improves his handles and shows he can be a lead guard, it is going to take more than 2 years to get to the league. He is honestly not going to be able to do that at most power 5 schools unless it is a team that is struggling such as a Northwestern type program or some DePaul like team. He most likely has to decide does he go somewhere where he has the ball more and learning on the fly or staying at Illinois and honing craft while knowing Curbelo is a beast and will be one of the best players in the Big10 (maybe even country). I think Adam could benefit at Illinois by excelling at his defense, showing improvement from 3, and showing more flashes with his dribble drive while also having more opportunities this year. However, to me it does not make sense to go to another school such as Kentucky where he would actually have the ball less. I just hope he realizes that Brad did start him this year, he got around 25 mpg, improved his defense that Brad held him too, and did get many wide and I mean wide open shots to where he did okay at for something he is known for. With Ayo being gone (and that is not a knock but a praise to how good Ayo was), Adam has a chance to get the ball more and show what he can do. If he improves his shot making and ball handling, I'm sure Illinois will continue to let him have the ball more, just like any team would have let him. I will say that I feel that if he went to programs such as Kansas, Gonzaga, Baylor, Duke, North Carolina, etc... and shot the same %, he probably would have played less minutes than he did for the #2 team heading into the tournament.

Didn't somebody point out that it was strange that Miller only got 15 minutes in the OT win against OSU in BTT championship game. Maybe a red flag stat??

I didn't notice (not meant to be spiteful) at the time. Curious to hear what comes out as time passes if Ace leaves.

It seems like our roster situation has improved since Miller made his announcement. If Trent comes back along with our new guys coming in we should have a strong guards(I was worried for a couple days) with or without Miller

A question I do have is how long does Miller have to make has decision to come back because there is one scholarship spot left unless someone else transfers? I get the impression this coaching staff does not wait forever for a kid to make a decision.

Anybody on here going to the O&B game on Monday? I am very curious what reception Miller gets from our fans. Hopefully it's a good one that makes him feel at home.
I've been wondering the same thing... No clue how fans will react. I doubt they'd boo him as that might be misinterpreted as being against other guys so I'll bet that people will be cordial.
