For being such an intelligent guy Mr. Whitman has certainly hired some pretty poor coaches. Smith, Fahey, Turk.
Agreed, but then with a fairly quick recovery in the Underwood hire.

While still in his honeymoon stage, Bielema could turn it into a "full recovery." And no one cares about Fahey (although it's time for her to finally go, once JW gets over the longstanding relationship he has with her).

Don't care. If our men's basketball team has sustained success and BB has us semi-consistently making bowl games, Josh will have done his job in my book.
Exactly, ADs at Power 5 schools are measured by two things, Men's BB and Football. Yes, Lovie was a miss but to cry about the Women's BB coach? C'mon man.

Holy crap, man. It's one thing to be realistic, but this sounds practically self-hating. You're actually poo-pooing that we are spending money that we clearly are able to spend on short notice to keep a good assistant?

+1

Reminds me of the mistakes of Michigan football, and how they completely mismanaged one of the historically great programs with out-dated thinking. They watched as Ohio State showed them how it's done, adapting to the times going to multiple CFPs, by not forgetting to bring the checkbook, among other things.

Maybe we as individual fans think it's too much --that's ok. But in the landscape of competing at the top of the conference and beyond, it's the right move.

Sooooo does anybody care to at least give us a hint at what's going on?? I'm trying to enjoy my Friday and not just refresh IL all evening!! 😁
Whispers that OA is staying put.

Some posts on UK boards already saying things like "there are other great assistant coaches out there," "next man up," and "we shouldn't have to beg him to come to UK." In other words, acting like we do when we miss out on a recruit. The universal language of the spurned.

Why do you even care, it's not your money lol

If rich boosters want to foot the bill, by all means let em have at it.
Right. In some ways, this is a giant pissing contest, just bigger stakes. I'm thrilled that some of our big money boosters are putting their money where their mouth is. And I love that our offer is for 4 years. Clearly, not messing around.

BRucks, you seem to be a very old school Illini fan who has put in his time. Given the ADs you have seen in your time, I am not sure how you can really complain about Josh Whitman of all people. Frankly, he makes our last two look like chumps.

Exactly. And when Lovie was hired most everyone thought it was a major 'coup'. I remember someone saying, "There's not a recruit out there who would not welcome Lovie Smith to their living room." We just didn't know Lovie had little interest in heading out to those living rooms.

There's no way we win this. Antigua was a key to Calipari's glory days at Kentucky. Also, Kentucky's down two assistants. Also, their basketball resources run very deep. Also, they're Kentucky, and we're not. Any way you look at it, if they want Antigua, they'll get him. The only way we prevail is by making an offer so absurd that even Kentucky boosters say it's crazy. And, if we manage to keep Antigua, it doesn't make us better. It preserves the status quo. And the status quo is not so fantastic that it warrants paying our assistants salaries that even Kentucky boosters find crazy.

If Kentucky matches our offer and Antigua leaves, which most seem to anticipate, it reinforces their status as a top-tier program, and ours as a second-tier program. We will have offered him more money than anyone, ever, and he will still have left for a better job.

We can't win so we shouldn't try unless we do and then we really lose?

I bet your significant other has some crazy self-esteem issues.

I'm not getting my hopes up just yet, but yeah ... I question any fan's attitudes if they wouldn't be ecstatic about such news if OA and Chin stay. To fend off the greatest college basketball program of all-time - a place where one of these coaches used to work - would be a landmark moment for the reputation of Illini basketball. I am not sure how anyone could argue otherwise, unless they were predisposed to poo-poo our AD or our staff.
