We're not going to outspend Kentucky basketball, so the only way we win is if we offer Antigua (and maybe Chin) more money that Kentucky thinks he's/they're worth. Our prize is the exact same staff we have now, only they cost us millions more. Essentially, winning means we triple our mortgage, but keep the same house. And it still won't be as nice as Kentucky's house.

Meanwhile, there are dozens of assistants contributing at more successful programs who are going to think they're worth at least as much as Antigua, so we drive salary inflation in a way that will affect all major D1 programs, us included, for a long time.

I think the offer JW has made is the final offer. IF UK counters and OA leaves, so be it is what JW is thinking. Doubt JW will go any higher.

Secondly, this is not just JW/BU, it is a bunch of pissed of donors - been pissed of ever since a coach bolted to Kansas.

BTW, "capitalism" in BB is called the National Title. I assume someone gamed the situation and said OA is worth $1.2M/yr assuming we make it to NT in the next 4 years.

Doesn't this past season give Underwood & co a great deal of credibility, provided they get players? In that context, $1.2 mil seems worth it.

Unfortunately, I'm guessing/speculating that from OA's point of view, he's probably giving Kentucky the tie-breaker. He's been there before, knows their boosters and way they recruit. Maybe I'm not giving his relationships here enough credit, but I'd think the Kentucky recruiting juggernaut would make his life easier, at least in that regard. Again, just wild speculation on my part.

I know I’ve caught flack for this but again, in a vacuum I agree. But the 2021 hs recruiting season is over, and if UK flops again this year the calls for Cal to move on will become quite a bit louder. So he would be going into a situation with little to no margin for error and largely out of his control (ie no chance to bring in an AD to shore things up next year). And if Cal moves on sure OA will have a job somewhere but here he is guaranteed 4 years of being the highest paid assistant in the land and able to wait until the right hc gig comes along.

Josh Whitman and Coach Underwood have been all about healing the wounds of past Illini disappointments. They could hardly have done a better job up until now. These are intelligent guys who have proven they know how to get results... Acting Like a Top Ten Program. They "Get It".
For being such an intelligent guy Mr. Whitman has certainly hired some pretty poor coaches. Smith, Fahey, Turk.

There's no way we win this. Antigua was a key to Calipari's glory days at Kentucky. Also, Kentucky's down two assistants. Also, their basketball resources run very deep. Also, they're Kentucky, and we're not. Any way you look at it, if they want Antigua, they'll get him. The only way we prevail is by making an offer so absurd that even Kentucky boosters say it's crazy. And, if we manage to keep Antigua, it doesn't make us better. It preserves the status quo. And the status quo is not so fantastic that it warrants paying our assistants salaries that even Kentucky boosters find crazy.

If Kentucky matches our offer and Antigua leaves, which most seem to anticipate, it reinforces their status as a top-tier program, and ours as a second-tier program. We will have offered him more money than anyone, ever, and he will still have left for a better job.

Holy crap, man. It's one thing to be realistic, but this sounds practically self-hating. You're actually poo-pooing that we are spending money that we clearly are able to spend on short notice to keep a good assistant? A "cooler" and "more handsome" guy is talking to our girlfriend, and our fans want to have some pride and tell him to buzz off. And you are taking issue with this...

Why do you even care, it's not your money lol

If rich boosters want to foot the bill, by all means let em have at it.
