The "underlying issue" could be that BU has prepared them well & given them confidence...
This is where I'm at. It sucks to lose assistant coaches. But if coaching under BU means you can jump to AC at UK (Chin) or get promoted to AC at a school that previously had you in a non-coaching role (Gentry), that's a credit to BU.

Recruits want to jump to the NBA and play pro ball somewhere. Those are their professional aspirations. Well, ACs have professional aspirations too. If putting players in the League helps with recruiting players, then helping ACs progress their careers should help with recruiting and replacing ACs.

There have to be talented and capable ACs out there that feel like their careers have stagnated. Maybe they'll see coming to Illinois as a way out of a current rut.

Seriously... Like all of us in the real working world. A larger more financial secure company came offering us more money and a better work environment. Our current employer countered but it was to late. Its Kentucky and Gonzaga who came offering. Hmmmm!! I would take that new job everyday!

Hire two good replacements and move forward.
UK might be Mortons but Illinois is not McDonalds. And judging by the contracts being given to our coaches I don't think Illinois is heading off the fiscal cliff.

Doug Mills and Harry Combes are arguably the two best coaches to ever lead our program. Both came to Illinois directly from high school.
Didn't they use peach baskets back then?

We will get good replacements. Maybe some with loyalty. Don’t sleep on Chet F. or someone with O&B blood

Deep.down I feel.that way. However based our record the past 15 years its like comparing Burger King to The Cheesecake Factory...

I don't think anyone is arguing that ACs can't leave. I think most are curious, worried, and/or anxious about the impact moving forward.

Depends on the job.

Can't assume anything is wrong with BU here. If so, why wait until now to leave? So, they stick with him through the bad years, but can't do the same when they are having success?

Well maybe it was a bit of hyperbole. But I think Podz is going to be very very good. Like 1st team AA good.
Not sure why so many believe that Podz is going to be great. If he is an Illini, then I hope they are correct, and if he is not an Illini, I could care less, but his level of high school competition and abbreviated AAU time leads me to believe he has a lot to prove.

Not to mention he is maskly challenged

Indy, 0440, and Lville have all come in to say it's not a BU issue. I'm comfortable with their info. To me, it's recruiting at KU vs. recruiting at UI, and probably money.

When it comes to male motivation, it's always one, or a combination of, three things. Money, sex, and power. Kentucky = more money, and more recruiting power.

Unless it's Louisville, Kentucky.

100% not a BU issue. Both OA and Chin have a ton of respect for Brad.

You are one rich, horny, power-hungry s.o.b.

I buy this. Just incredibly bad luck. I have a feeling OA back to Kentucky was probably inevitable at some point, made moreso by the terrible season UK had. Just sucks he seems to be taking Chin with him. And makes complete sense Gentry would want the Gonzaga AC job. Just sucks it's the same time as the OA/Chin departures. Just incredibly bad luck, but I worry that perception>reality may be an issue. All the more reason the replacement hires are absolutely crucial.

Assistants Kenny Payne, Joel Justus, and Tony Barbee have all left UK in the last 8 months. Bruiser Flint and Jai Lucas are about to get demoted. Does that send a strong message about their program?
I think it does, as does their recent record. Pretty clear that all is not rosy in Lexington.

I want to believe this, I need to believe this, but I struggle to believe this. Why can't we just have nice things? Is it cause I drunkenly walked through the Morrow Plots that one night?

It's because after a rough decade+, we're a 7.5 after a single great season. Kentucky (and boosters) is a dime even after a bad season.

That might change in the future, but it is what it is for now. We're putting in the work. We'll get there

Middle to lower tier. There is not enough sustained success the last 15 years to place us in an upper tier. We rarely land the 5 star player. We rarely land All Americans. We have 0 S16 appearance the last 15 years. Average program right now? Yes. Upper Tier? Not a chance.

You can be an Illini fan and operate in reality. Let's pump the brakes on the We're Back language as well. We are poised to lose Ayo, Kofi, Miller, and 2 or 3 assistants. I'd prefer some success in the NCAA tourney on a consistent basis before we declare "We're Back"
Well said, we have the ability as a group to view this program with blinders. The Sweet 16 drought is the real bummer to me tho... Last three Sweet 16 teams from state of Illinois are Loyola in '21 and '18, then Southern Illinois in '07. Seems crazy it's been that long.
