The fact of the matter is that AC/Recruiter at UK is an easier job than at U of I. If the money is the same, you take the job at UK. Your work/home balance will likely be significantly better. (even if its still trash) Every McD AA type player will listen & consider UK. These guys can have a class pretty much locked up before summer. If they don't, they can still get top 50 talent at the last second without any trouble.
Think about the time and energy BU, Chin. & OA put in trying to get Khalil Whitney (I know, I know...) to U of I. One phone call from Cal's staff on a Friday and he was signed by Monday.
People want to argue its a lateral move? Talk about drowning in Orange Kool Aid...
I don't think people are really saying it's a lateral move because it's Kentucky. They mean that people envisioned the next stop being a head coaching position.

In other news, Tevian Jones is interested in transferring back to UI.
Tevian's numbers were pretty unimpressive for playing at Southern Utah (Big Sky?). He would need to be doing a lot of things that do not show on the scoresheet (ala DMW) to be worth a second look.

Third response:

Excited to see who we get to replace him!

Good luck to Frazier.

You call that a meltdown Virgina Tech? You've got a lot to learn about how about to act when you lose an assistant coach! 🥱
Grew up in southwest va. Basketball season just gets you to spring football. They are truly only a football school. Most fans wouldn’t be able to even tell you who Chet is. They can’t fill a 9k basketball arena. Even since being in the ACC. I’ve talked to several friends and they didn’t know who I was talking about. No lost sleep for homie fans. Great news for us!

How long until we announce Beavis and Butthead are going to Kentucky so we can move forward with our lives and the coaching search publicly? I want to see some of the big time college bball analyst opinions on all of this.

Listened to the Sturdy podcast. Interesting that they even brought up Jamal Walker as a potential candidate. Why would he ever want to come back after the way things ended last time? They also seem to mention a recruit he would bring in. Any idea who that would be?

Wow. Couldn’t land a recruit when he worked here and all of a sudden he has a player for us. No thanks! Keep going Jamal. Nice man can’t recruit with the big boys

I have to believe at this point that Jamal Walker will never coach another NCAA tournament game. I don't want to be the team taking on his bad mojo.

Was Walker the assistant who landed Jeremiah Tilmon? Obviously that didn't work out well at all but was a huge get at the time.

He would be pretty far down my list but not sure how realistic Mennenga are and Kimani Young are. Hopefully we aren't already onto plan Bs and Cs.

My reading between the lines of his exit was JW was unhappy with how good of a recruiter he was trying to be.
Maybe I misread. But I believe Antigua had similar angst.
I read the "leaks" the same way as you did. It seemed Walker's recruiting tactics were a little "too grey area" for the AD and BU had to finesse that situation with the AD.

The grey areas of recruiting can be argued ad nauseum. We have a variety of posters that think we are "dirty" and plenty that think we are "clean". I tend to err on the side of thinking all high level recruiting takes some level of "grey area" activities. The shade of grey allowed varies greatly from school to school. Just because Jamal wasn't the lead recruiter for kids, does not mean he did not have connections to donors, alumni, etc etc.

I also tend to think there is a reason that he was hired by Drew at Grand Canyon. Drew knows how the game is played too.

I was at a h.s. tournament a few years ago in FL and had a seat right behind Marcus Liberty and have hoped the Illini would hire him since then. No college eperience, but runs summer camps, h.s. coach, AAU, Chicago ties and played on my all time favorite Illini basketball team.
