Would be nice to have a relationship with a person and quasi-alum who's worth over 100 billions dollars. Larry Ellison Stadium? Larry Ellison Arena when the deal with State Farm ends? We have a lot of ultra-wealthy alums, especially those who passed through our STEM disciplines.
Did you ring?

So let me get this straight, Payne doesn't like his position coach at Florida, leaves to come to Illinois, and now his position coach is coming to Illinois?
Or was it that when we were looking for transfer bigs, Pinkins gave a glowing recommendation for Payne?

Edit: I guess not

It's great the relationship we have Shad. He's worth 8-10 billion dollars, and he has been extremely generous over the years. But Larry Ellison is worth $100 billion dollars. Build or establish the relationship.

It is a bit of an assumption, but something tells me that Ellison probably isn't a huge supporter of higher education. At least, not in the current political climate.

One thing Illinois should NOT do is hire another AC that has ties to one specific AAU program. Hire a coach that has ties to Chicago (attended high school there or recruited the city for another college team), but no more AAU coaches. I liked the Coleman hire, but it didn't help us with Meanstreets or Mullins.
Big big world out there

He may like sports (Oracle Arena). Also, most people are vain: he may like to see his name emblazoned on a building or have other things named after him. "The Larry Ellison Endowed Associate Head Coach", guaranteeing that our associate head coach will always be one of the best compensated in college basketball, thus ensuring access to the best talent. I'm dreaming big. Doesn't hurt to be friends with someone who's worth 100 billion dollars. I hope Josh calls Larry Ellison -- and our other billionaire alums -- at least once a week.

From what I gather, our administration in the past has burned bridges with several potential big $ donors - Ellison and Andreessen being the 2 most prominent. I listened to one of Andreessen's podcasts and in essence he said he would rather burn in Hades than give the UI any $

I wonder what caused that. I mean, I get annoyed with getting phone calls from the university asking me to donate, too, but that is in part because it was incessant even while I was still in grad school and paying off student loans. If I were a billionaire I'd have to think I would do it.

...and if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that billionaires love to field 52+ calls a year from the same person asking for money for the same purpose each time.

Could be. I just don't know if the optics of that would outweigh the optics of giving to a university for him at this moment in time. "Oracle Arena" does have a nice ring to it, though.

Call me nuts but a call to a billionaire may be a little more nuanced and personalized than the ones non-billionaires get. But I wouldn't know.

Personalize it all you want, but the expectation that Whitman should be in weekly communications with every high net worth person having any sort of relationship to the university seems like it might be a bit much.

When Andreessen left UI to form Netscape along with James Clark, the split was pretty nasty. Can't say I blame him for wanting nothing to do with the U after that mess.

If the Pinkins smoke is true (we'll have our big man coach), then we should go all out for Mennenga. But as I've said, if Oregon wants to keep him, it won't be easy to get him as Phil Knight has unlimited resources. Does anyone know what if any relationship the school has with Larry Ellison? I know he didn't graduate (he figured out what he wanted to do and went and did it, like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Steve Jobs). Would be nice to have a relationship with a person and quasi-alum who's worth over 100 billions dollars. Larry Ellison Stadium? Larry Ellison Arena when the deal with State Farm ends? Can any say Shad??

I was stock broker for four years, before and after the tech bubble. I had a co-worker who had a very wealthy local uncle (you would know if I named him). His uncle had a policy of not doing business with relatives, but my co-worker called him every week trying to change his mind. The uncle took the call every week but continued to demur. As far as I know he never persuaded his uncle. My ex-coworker was persistent and a hard-worker (he was always in the office before I arrived and I got in fairly early). This ex-coworker now owns a very prominent business and is doing quite well -- not sure if his uncle helped him. Persistence pays off, one way or another.

Our athletic administration is in great hands. Josh is doing a great job. I trust that if there is a chance of resurrecting a relationship with the likes of a Larry Ellison, then he knows how to do it. It's great to have someone in charge who feels the pain just like we do (I am an alum). That pain will motivate him to take our revenue sports to the upper echelon of the Big Ten and nationally.
