All the best to Kofi. Definitely did us a solid by making his decision early.
OK, all you transfer big men. Especially with multiple years of eligibility. Lots of PT available at Illinois! In a year you can have a body by Fletch too and a place in the NBA draft.

I'm going to miss Kofi. The best pure post player I have seen at Illinois, going back to 1970.

I remember hearing similar things from Ayo and his camp before he came back for another year. A lot can change in two months.

Either way, thanks for your contributions to bringing Illinois back, big guy. All of Illini Nation is rooting for your success.

True, but that was largely due to COVID and it wasn’t clear if there was going to be a draft, let alone opportunities to work out for NBA teams.

That article doesn't make much sense to me, they used a quote from April when he declared. Doesn't seem like there is any new information to suggest he will sign an agent or return to college. It even mentions he has another 2 months to decide.
That was my thought too. The timing makes no sense. If he does well at the pre-draft combine he’s gone. If he doesn’t he has 3 weeks to decide and his options are 100% open. If he starts shooting up the draft boards I guess we can move on and fill the spot. But we almost have to keep that spot open in the meantime.

Seems to be popping up in the 2nd round on a couple draft boards lately, specifically 55th on Sam Vecenie of the Athletic's.

Posted this in the recruiting thread, but looks like it will be swallowed up by a thread tangent on downstate Illini players. Could be a possible replacement for Kofi if he does indeed move on.

Kevin Samuel, 6-11, 255, from TCU entered the portal. Averaged 8.8/7.8 with 1.7 bpg this year. His stats previous year were a bit better with 10 ppg, 8.4 rpg and 2.7 bpg. Strictly a low post guy and even a worse free throw shooter than Kofi. Don’t remember seeing him play this year.

100%. these reports dont add up. Theres a reason we havent filled the big man spot yet. On a side note, what would have been of Meyers if he stayed another year..he definitely needed more time to mature.

I think his bank account matured just fine ;)...would have been nice to see him play another year though

If a team is telling him he's their first rounder, it's a no-brainer of course.
If a team is telling his he's their second rounder, it's a tough choice to stay in, IMO, but
OTOH, a team overseas might be offering him millions, so that's a no-brainer, too.
Good luck to him it was great fun watching him play, hope he now gets rich.

What's scary if it's just one or two teams saying we'll take you in the second round and then things change on draft night. Would hate to see him go undrafted.

selfishly bummed of course but happy for him. will be a long time before we have another roster like last season, we had all the pieces and just couldn’t execute

table is set for Payne

This. I’m selfishly upset because I honestly think we could have been just as good and exciting next year if he stayed, but I’m ecstatic for him as a player and person. Can’t wait for Ayo and Kofi to be representing us in the League!

Yes, and maybe he would have learned not to use ethnic slurs when playing Call of Duty on Twitch. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, that the tough part I think of staying in, if that's the case.
If he goes undrafted, I think he still makes a bundle overseas so it's still good for him financially.
I wish he'd stay with us for one more year and make the 1st round more likely, but it's tough to turn
down the cash I think he'll be able to make.
