I don't get the "offseason has been a disaster" takes. Really the only failure so far has been that the frontcourt depth hasn't been replenished, but get another commitment from the transfer market or convince Kofi to come back and that's moot. As for the assistants, Chester is a great addition and at this point and I'm sure the team is going to announce Brian Randle when the Suns finish their run, so we shouldn't lose much on that front either.

Now to the main subject of the thread. One thing we all can agree here about BU's recruiting is that he's not a guy who's going to be left holding the bag. He's going to cast a wide net and if you don't want to come here, he'll find another option. We know he's been recruiting guys on the transfer market, and if one of them commits before Kofi makes his decision, I believe that means there will be no more schollies available. Kofi is doing what's best for himself and ensuring he has some place to play next year. It would suck if he went to Kentucky, but I'll hold off on making judgements before we know for sure what he plans on doing.

I agree Antigua is Kentuckifying us. Bunch of Lexington businessmen lined up with green to make this happen. Probably all belong to Antigua's country club. Hope I'm wrong. Some O and B businessmen need to keep him in town. This is the sad state of the game.
This. It is not about legitimate marketing. It's about legitimizing the Ed Martins.

You have no idea how much horse racing and bourbon $$$$ are in play here........Fat cats here in Ky don't have a passion for a lot of stuff, but Big BLue means Big Green here in the boondocks.....NLI allows the Illini to start playing a $$$ game that UK perfected years ago , so we are playing catch up in a very fluid game....

Population of Kentucky - 4.68 million
Population of Illinois - 12.68 million

Being 3 times as big and with an alumni base prolly 70% larger if it mirrors the existing student populations, you're still competitive from a marketing population. Also, when we're good, Chicago damn sure gets on board like we're Kentucky....but once again, this is a very nuanced and multifaceted situation.

A college athlete can sell there gear once they are done at an institution. The only possible path for kofi to return to this institution is to sever the scholarship and re-recruit him loophole style.

Anything can happen... I didn't expect this but you can't be suprised by anything anymore.

I assume he's going to Kentucky if
he doesn't stay in the draft

We've taken a ton of punches this offseason. I am far from an insider, but if he actually was going to come back to Illinois, he wouldn't be in the transfer portal. Guys who go in the transfer portal don't come back. Call it pessimistic/realistic whatever. It will hurt to see him in another college uniform.

To all my brothers and sisters here , have a blessed night ...................

To be fair, even I could have coached that team to a Sweet 16. It practically coached itself.
I'm not a Weber worshiper but he took a team mostly recruited by Kruger and Self and did a better job bringing them together than Self would have. Wouldn't have been talented enough to win without Kruger and Selfs recruiting but Weber's coaching that year and the year before were impeccable. He made few mistakes.

Based on what evidence? Self built that team; Weber didn't. Self has subsequently won a national championship with a team he has build; Weber hasn't.

All evidence points to this being pure coattails. I will give Weber credit for not screwing up the team that already existed, but I won't pretend Self couldn't have achieved the same or better results.

Bill Self has finished 1st or 2nd in his conference in 22 out of the last 23 seasons, at 3 different schools. In the one season he didn't, he finished 3rd. He's been to the Elite Eight 10 times. Self's track record of "bringing a team together" is nearly unmatched.

There was an interesting take on this at IlliniBoard that essentially boils down to this being a covid thing.

This is the TL;DR version. Typically, the NBA draft is in late June and the deadline to withdraw is prior to the NCAA transfer portal deadline. This year it's reversed with the transfer deadline being July 1st and NBA Draft withdrawal July 7th. In order to be able to transfer without being required to sit out a year, names had to be in by 11:59 pm yesterday. The thought is that Kofi put his name in to keep the no-sit transfer rule in play in the event we didn't have a spot for him if he comes back, and that others who have put their name in both the portal and the draft are doing the same thing. They're hedging their bets.

I know some will scoff at this at being too optimistic. It might be, but I thought it was still worth sharing.
