Kofi Cockburn in the transfer portal

There was an interesting take on this at IlliniBoard that essentially boils down to this being a covid thing.

This is the TL;DR version. Typically, the NBA draft is in late June and the deadline to withdraw is prior to the NCAA transfer portal deadline. This year it's reversed with the transfer deadline being July 1st and NBA Draft withdrawal July 7th. In order to be able to transfer without being required to sit out a year, names had to be in by 11:59 pm yesterday. The thought is that Kofi put his name in to keep the no-sit transfer rule in play in the event we didn't have a spot for him if he comes back, and that others who have put their name in both the portal and the draft are doing the same thing. They're hedging their bets.

I know some will scoff at this at being too optimistic. It might be, but I thought it was still worth sharing.
This is the best, or most positive, take on this I have seen. Appreciate it.

No problem. Sometimes I find Robert's takes to be a little out there, but this one makes sense, particularly when you think about how many players are doing the same thing as Kofi.

Now, if we hear the meeting with our coaches didn't go well and he's visiting at Kentucky, well... That's when I'll join the Chicken Little contingent.

Please don't....

I’m guessing this is a “subtle” hint to start liking everything on every social media outlet for our players, to maximize their earnings potential through these NIL deals. The more likes and wherever else all those Facebook algorithms are looking for when measuring influence are going to be key to getting better deals for our players. So if anything we should be visiting the schools IG, Facebook, etc and getting busy interacting with those (and the players…?) accounts. That just might be the ticket. If there ever was a more rabid fan base than what we have here I have yet to see it.
I don't have facebook, twitter or instagram acccounts. They are missing a segment of the market similar to me. Perhaps the players could start a LinkedIn group that we could follow even if it simply posts links to the other accounts. 'm able to click on all the links posted here. eg, Frazier posted to follow on twitter and instagram - If I could follow in LinkedIn I would buy his gear and stuff. Unfortunately Fighting Illini Men's Club Basketball on LinkedIn has 8 followers including me. I would rather not have to support facebook/twitter just to support the guys.

Antigua literally talked to Kofi today about going back to Illinois lol
I have to say that 0440 & a few others on this board really help make situations like this one tolerable. They seem to speak from a knowledge base that is grounded more in fact (of course facts can change) than speculation.
I personally believe that in the end we will find that BU is more than competent to both handle & thrive in this new hybrid of professional amateurism that is upon us!

Chin went from $285 to $425K.

So $140k raise isn't relevant? We're living in different realities.

OA was definitely the prize in this battle, but the point remains --money talks, and much of the money for these kinds of escalations comes from boosters.

I'm not a Weber worshiper but he took a team mostly recruited by Kruger and Self and did a better job bringing them together than Self would have. Wouldn't have been talented enough to win without Kruger and Selfs recruiting but Weber's coaching that year and the year before were impeccable. He made few mistakes.
Well said!

I think the point they were trying to make was Illinois got outbid….which isn’t true.

Can you clarify on this? It seems like you're saying Illinois offered both coaches that went to Kentucky more money and they still left. Or are you saying that applies only to Chin?

If either of those are true, I'm impressed with how much Illinois supporters stepped up. We're all disappointed with the turnover, but funding is a big part of eventually winning those battles, and IMO says a lot about the enthusiasm behind the program.

Hopefully we can dump the balance into the Kofi fund.

Guys look at NIL guidelines from schools. Players can't capitalize on school's trademarks. Kentucky fans will buy Kentucky shirts and not so much a player shirt w/out school affiliation IMHO.

The County Market needs to reach out to Kofi...or State Farm, Archer Daniels,...

This is how I feel now after listening to a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan, especially " Voodoo Child ""
I can face what becomes of Kofi and the Illini program with a conviction that we will survive whatever the outcome is and have a great season this year and for many more to come....

Go ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it's a coincidence or mere happenstance that Kofi entered the portal at the very last chance he had. He could have done it a couple months ago, or a couple weeks ago. He waited until the last minute. He's keeping his options open. He'd be an idiot not to, given so many unknowns surrounding his situation. You don't buy insurance with the plan of using it. Maybe he does come back to school and decides to transfer, but I don't think the fact he entered the portal is a sign he will. It's a sign that possibility exists.

My biggest hope is that if he comes back, he capitalizes on the marketing opportunity. I'm blown away how these players haven't been fully milking their image. He needs companies to bid on his announcement video
