so what happens when he gets there and it ends up being nowhere close to $1M?
Then it will come out and recruits wont take them seriously. Thats why I think, if true, they have every reason to make it happen.

Really not liking the way NIL is currently changing things…

so the best teams in college year after year will be the teams that make the most money for NILs…

Pack it up… I no longer have any sports I enjoy watching
And this is different to how it’s always been how exactly?

Is a player more valuable playing in the G league, or at a college? Fans love college ball far more, so it seems likely IMO that the money will be there.
What if fans turn off college basketball because of this stuff and ratings plummet? Seems $ could crowd out school pride, spirit.

Kind of like when MLB started free agency and all sports pages nauseatingly read about $ and contracts. Sickening time for a fan of the art of playing.

This isn't college BB to me anymore.......It's another NBA minor league grassroots league for the benefit of the NCAA fat cats still in business....

Everything dirty is now out in the open and those promises being made now could end up biting a tarhole butt down the road........It's such a bewildering situation now that " NIL " has become a staple in recruiting circles.....

Definition of nil

: NOTHING, ZERO

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is this a prime example of an oxymoron ????

One oxymoron example is "deafening silence,"

NIL definately means more than zero in college sports now........

Exactly what I was thinking, especially against UK and possibly tOSU
Yeah, I wouldn’t hold out much hope there lol unless we quickly change our tune and offer the big man whatever it is he wants to hear. Add a 0 or 2 to the projections, idgaf

Keeping Kofi has been the staff's number one priority the last week-could have caused them to maybe low ball the nil number to Garcia. We will see what happens with the big fella now...
Not sure exactly how we could low-ball that when those dollars come from third parties. Unless I'm missing something, those "offers" are really at the mercy of said external groups.

Between the immediate eligibility transfers and the NIL, the whole concept of recruiting has almost instantaneously morphed into something akin to NFL cap management. How much cash can we raise to give to athletes? How do we spread it out across a team or across an athletic department? Do we focus on one sport only and let the others suck? Do we focus on prospects (HS signees) or free agents?

The teams that have been doing this for years can now just be open about it, and they don't really need to change much. Consequently, they will reap the rewards of the new system. Teams that have not been paying players or have been playing at the margins will, at least in the short term, be feeder teams - at least until they figure out how to play the game and line up the cash.

This will likely be no fun - at least for a while - as we get picked apart by the more experienced money managers.

more of unc giving out unrealistic numbers and we were not willing to do the same and gave Garcia a much more realistic number
Yes. Maybe I don’t understand the market at all, but hard seeing maybe 3rd or 4th option on UNC, with no prior history at the school and no independent national brand (a la Zion) being worth 7 figures in endorsements. But then again, what’s the downside of UNC’s “puffery”?

The NIL reality is going to hit hard and fast. It has little to do with marketability and more to do with how wanted a player/recruit is by a school. Sure there's going to be the "instagram" marketing deals, but in the major sports, it's going to be a "signing bonus," and my worry is this will further separate the haves (bluebloods) from the have nots.

I just assumed that @illini0440 caught wind of this and abandoned ship so as not to deal with the eventual blowback from those around here who take this way too seriously.
That was my first thought also that something was amiss and the heat from the non positive crowd would be too much to put up with.....

I really don't blame him at all for leaving.......

That's a better play for us in the long run, if true. A program that habitually over-promises will get a reputation.
Maybe. But it be any different than programs in the last wining at all cost now and not worrying about ramifications down the road?

Did UNC ever really suffer from the academic fraud issues with the 2005 “championship”? What about KU and the Darnell Jackson stuff? Or the “*” on Bill Selfs only “championship”?

All this NIL stuff is playing out just about like I imagined. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on Garcia and Kofi until I hear otherwise, but I’ve said all along this stuff benefits the blue bloods and big markets. We are neither. Good for the players getting paid.
