Yasmani Grandal is the latest to go down. It didn't look good at all. Tony says he was on crutches after the game.

This is insane. I don't know how many injuries to key players the Sox can overcome. The good news is the division is pretty weak this year. Hope for the best on Yaz but expecting the absolute worst.

Yermin Mercedes, who was recently demoted to Triple A, wrote in an Instagram post tonight that he is "stepping aside" from baseball indefinitely while also apologizing to the team for "not accepting some of their decisions."

It was interesting listening to Cody Decker on WSCR yesterday afternoon talk about this. He and Mercedes have similar stories, putting up consistent, solid numbers at every level of the minors and then never really being given a full shot in the Majors.

Mercedes has to be incredibly frustrated being sent back down, mashing again at AAA, and not getting brought back up despite all the Sox’s injuries. He’s 28 years old. Not like he has many more chances to prove himself. Wonder if he asked for his release to try to hook on with another team and the Sox refused.

Clutch 3-run bomb by Eloy tonight. More impressive was his defense in left, which has never been his strong suit. Made a few nice running grabs and threw out a runner at the plate that.

I think he's back.

Rough first appearance for Tepera. Gave up a solo homer, single and a walk then was pulled. I'm gonna chalk this up to nerves trying to make great first impression on a contending team. The fans have every right to boo, but I still don't agree with them giving the new guy that kind of treatment.

Hope for a better first appearance for Kimbrel

Wouldn't mind seeing C's catcher getting plunked in ribs today....sends a message to the right person and league IMO. Of course the way things go the umps will give a warning pre game and would eject our pitcher. Maybe Sunday would be better.

Have a game, Seby Zavala. Hit his first 3 homers of his career tonight.

The bad news is that the Sox lost 12-11.

Maybe I’m in the minority here - but why exactly? What message would they be sending and what did the catcher do wrong? I have watched this replay a bunch and can’t seem to figure out what the issue is

He kept calling up and in pitches with a guy who didn't have control that day. It's asking for someone to get drilled. Then when Abreu got hit in the shoulder he was doing again. That is where everyone is trying to be Abreu out but if they can't control their fast ball it gets dangerous real quick. TLR had an interview where he discussed this before the game on Saturday.

So we blame the catcher for calling a pitch in the inside third and upper third of the plate because the pitcher was struggling with command? Come on now. You can argue maybe he shouldn’t have done it (hindsight is 20/20 of course) but let’s not act like he deserves to get plunked. What’s the message to send? Don’t try to pitch a strike to Abreu that he struggles with (relatively)? I understand the safety concern, but I don’t think it at all merits a “message”. It was an honest mistake and he certainly trusted his pitcher more than LaRussa, but I expect any catcher would trust their pitcher more than the opposing manager…
