I’m a little disappointed that we don’t have more as Illinois has one of the largest international populations among US universities. I believe there’s only one new international student athlete on campus this year across all sports. It would be great if we could build a reputation as a leader in that respect.

Especially with our connection to China. Do Chinese student athletes play for foreign universities?

Leaving out Kofi was my mistake. I get where you’re coming from. I hope too that Illinois can build a culture where Latino players feel at home. I would also hope that international players would feel welcomed as well. I just think you have to be careful using terminology that does not acknowledge them as American. The fact that they can’t vote in US elections and that PR is not a state is our bad.

Covid has a huge impact on that issue across all schools.
