Just catching up on the media around "The Win" Art was playing with a bad shoulder and BP could not beat him out for #1qb? Ouch. So we really don't have a real qb on the team?

Obviously QB play has been a huge problem, but it’s inaccurate to say BP did not win the #1 spot. He was hurt during the bye week so Art got the start.

I think the easiest counter would be play action to the tight ends.
But you need a QB that can actually hit a moving target, recognize open receivers, and be able to work through at least two progressions.

By the time Peters sees the open receiver, decides to throw, and then actually throws the ball, any separation our receivers had is long gone. This often causes him to have paralysis by analysis because he doesn't uptake fluid situations quickly enough.

Staff needs to limit reads and then tuck and run. Harbaugh did this with Kaepernick early on. He gave him half the field to look at and then he was gone if it wasn't open. Peters isn't Kaepernick, but he can get yards with his legs. Having him sit in the pocket being indecisive helps no one. Get him out moving. That keeps the LBs playing underneath to play a step up which creates space underneath for receivers.

If he can't do this, give me anybody else. We undoubtedly have the worst QB room in the B1G and probably most other conferences.

Over or under 3.5 guys taking a snap at "QB" this weekend? I say "QB" because I fully expect some wildcat type stuff either behind The Barge or in regular packages.

BP starts, followed by IW, maybe even Chase Brown/McCray to ram it up in there. Ryan Johnson watch is officially on now that there are 4 games remaining. If BP continues to take eons to make decisions, let's see what our mediocre at best Division II QB can do. Our eyeballs need to see whether we have something or not for '22 and beyond.

I’ll go under. I don’t see IW as playing qb again for us. I believe BB is all in on making him a receiver and won’t do anything to take away from that other than a trick play like we’ve seen. No clue on Johnson. If he can read a defense and has half an arm, that might be enough to get by. Turnovers would be a big worry since he’s not used to B10 speed. As beat up as Peters has been, there’s a fairly good shot we see him at some point. I’m not sure if a wildcat helps you when you are as run heavy as we are.

My guess is, barring an injury, we see one QB: BP.

I’ve said this before, I highly doubt we see IW at QB, unless you mean one wildcat/direct snap play. It wasn’t very likely that BB was going to play IW much at QB (hence the position switch) when IW was getting regular practice/reps at QB. Now he hasn’t practiced at QB for months but you expect him to play? I really don’t expect to see Johnson either unless Peters gets hurt again. And I’m not sure what you mean by “our eyeballs.” BB and company are seeing him practice each week. And if by our you mean the fans, I’m certain BB could care less.

YES! Something quick and easy to hit with a big target! The play action eliminates a lot of field but Peters pocket awareness is... troublesome. I like it. This would be a good option to help him out. Keep it simple.

I'd like to see IW go vertical at full speed. If Rutgers crowds the line, he should be open for a quick pass.

So, BP needs to know where IW is and make a decision whether to handoff or pull the ball back to throw and the linemen may not go too far downfield.

May be asking too much. Perhaps this could be a designed play where BP has the option to pass to IW or run himself after faking a handoff.

Correct, IW would be taking snaps in a wildcat package in my hypothetical over/under.

Yes, the fans' eyeballs. Unless there are coaches or players on here, no one has seen Johnson play beyond warmups or indy drills.

BP is who he is at this point, and we don't have a future with him beyond this season. It is perfectly valid for fans to want to see our backup QBs in Johnson and Collier, Bielema's stance be damned! (/s)

I am well aware the QB battle for next season will likely be between Art and Transfer-To-Be-Named-Later, but it would be nice to get film on our other current QBs, too.

“Bielema’s stance be damned”. You’re off your nut.

I can see the appeal of the wildcat since it allows an extra blocker but I really feel it's almost never effective in practice. First problem is the defense pretty well knows what's about to happen. Second problem, which I think is worse, is the timing of the play is different from a normal handoff. Most of the time the player taking the snap just gets it and starts going which doesn't give the line a chance to establish blocks, create holes, and get to the second level. Basically they just smash into the back of the line and get swallowed up immediately or try to get outside with no edge set. Even a regular QB draw is effective because the QB drops back first and gives the line a chance to work. It's a big thing and I see it at the college and NFL levels both when teams try and use the wildcat.

Disagree. I would bet he couldn't care less.

It would be nice to win the game. Who is the film on our other QBs good for? Coaches see them every day in practice.

Vegas is trending towards Rutgers winning on the road. Three of their four losses are to Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. And unfortunately for us, no team is as good as its best win.

24 Rutgers
20 Illini

YTD, I'm 6-2. Thought we'd beat UTSA at home; and thought we'd get destroyed by Penn St on the road. (I'd love to see 270 passing yards from BP and a comfortable 14 point win. We seem to perform best when the opposing coach says "I wasn't expecting that" during his postgame press conference.)
No way Illini are passing for 270 yds (unless Brown and Williams get loose on a couple 75+ yd screen passes).

As for UTSA, they're legit--undefeated and ranked. They have big time skill position players. I'd take them over PSU right now.

I think the Illini can (and will) beat Rutgers.

We need to hit the Scarlet Pimpernels hard, and leave them dazed on the turf with snot bubblers. Go Illini.
