I think it was strat-o-matic, not magic. Loved that game back in the day!
Cracked me up that someone else remembered it by that name. I had forgotten that we always called it Strat-O-Magic too. Probably have the game to blame for ending up a stats major lol.

So I have a question on the glove color thing. I get, and think it's brilliant, that the team was directed to wear blue gloves to match Penn State's blue jerseys. But is there any rule on the color of gloves that a team can wear? If not, would we wear red gloves when playing at Wisconsin, Ohio State Indiana, Rutgers, crimson gloves at Minnesota, purple gloves when at Northwestern, etc. Is a team limited to only wearing their team colors (orange, blue, white in our case) or can we wear any color gloves we choose?
If I remember correctly gloves typically have to be in the teams color palettes. So we can wear orange, white, and blue with our current uniforms and we may be able to get away with black. Gray in the Gray Ghost Uni's. I don't know how strongly it is enforced in NCAA. I know in the NFL they always get fined for wearing off color stuff.

I actually still have mine from when I was a kid. Cowboys and Vikings. It's probably almost 50 years old, and it still rattles just as crazy and out of control as always! I'm missing some players, but I've thought about seeing what I could get for it on ebay.

Researched my question and found out that prior to the 2011 season all players were required to wear gray gloves. Beginning in 2011, teams could choose to wear whatever color gloves they wanted to. Now I'll be paying attention to what color gloves the Illini wear vs. opponents going forward.

As someone who doesn’t really live in the football world, what is the advantage to wearing gloves that match the opponents jersey?

While we certainly had a chance to win those games, if you look at post-game win expectancy, only one of the three, Purdue, is a game we truly should have won.

We had a 66% post game win expectancy against Purdue.

The other two games:

92% in favor of UTSA.
76% in favor of Maryalnd.

Surprisingly, even though we won the Nebraska game, Nebraska had a 59% post game win expectancy.

So even though we had opportunities for more wins, our current record sounds about right.

Against PSU, we had an 86% post game win expectancy. So that game was quite a bit closer than it really should have been.
It was closer due to the turnovers (IMO). Side note, what is post game win expectancy? How is it calculated?

Man, enough with the “we should be 6-2 or 5-3.” First, no guarantee we would have been successful if we had gone for it on fourth down. But beyond that, it is over and the Illini’s record now until Saturday is 3-5. I get it that people are mad he didn’t go for it, but let’s just move on.

So Penn St never countered our jumbo packages with an extra lineman or linebacker and stayed in their base the whole time. This allowed us to just run the ball and never forced us to go to our next level of plays to counter an adjustment.

Rutgers has a week to prepare. So two questions for the football minds in the room.

1. What do we think they will do vs our jumbo packages? Stay base like Penn St? Throw an extra DL or LB out there? Something else?

2. What counters do you think we’d most likely have ready to go in our jumbo package in anticipation of their defensive adjustments?

Robert and Martin O. seem to think that Rutgers -- with adequate time to prepare -- will be better equipped to deal with our gadget run offense packages. That point, coupled with the fact that Rutgers has a relatively porous pass defense, leads them to believe we'll pass quite a bit more on Saturday.

Vegas is trending towards Rutgers winning on the road. Three of their four losses are to Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. And unfortunately for us, no team is as good as its best win.

24 Rutgers
20 Illini

YTD, I'm 6-2. Thought we'd beat UTSA at home; and thought we'd get destroyed by Penn St on the road. (I'd love to see 270 passing yards from BP and a comfortable 14 point win. We seem to perform best when the opposing coach says "I wasn't expecting that" during his postgame press conference.)

I think Saturday's game depends on whether or not BB and the OC can come up with three simple plays that Peters can learn to read and throw quickly to. Three simple plays. If we can get Peters in some type of passing game, any kind of passing game, to complement a run game we can rely on, then we win big. If we can't do that... then I think the game is weather dependent and the forecast looks beautiful but really windy. I don't think it'll be a close game one way or the other. Could we see an over this weekend?

Regarding BB and the staff... I think they've done as good a job as could be expected. That first game against Neb we saw totally blown defensive coverages. Even with injuries I think the group has improved from game to game. The coaches can coach. I've liked what I've seen coming out after halftime. Virginia and UTSA were total disasters but UTSA was expected. All in all, coming on a road win, the fact that the game is +/- two to three points is good. If the staff can somehow create some average QB play this Saturday we win. That's gotta be the staff's goal. Gotta gameplan a simple passing attack. Make Rutgers adjust to that and THEN run the ball down their throats. And keep the defense off the field like we did last weekend. I feel like half this season is the coaches figuring out what their players can do and then figuring out how to reach them to get them to be successful. Time to do that for the QB.

I think the easiest counter would be play action to the tight ends.

While fair to point out, their fourth loss was to an absolutely hot garbage Northwestern team that got trucked by an average Nebraska team. Hard to tell what we are going to see Saturday, though the extra week of practice for them does give them an upper hand to an extent.
