While it would be nice to get some 4-stars, the last time we were consistently getting blue chip recruits, we went: 9-4, 5-7, 3-9, 7-6, 7-6. While that's a good stretch for five years considering what's happened the last decade, that's pretty rough overall for how much talent was here. I just want hardworking kids and good coaches that can get us competing for the West title. We already had that in BB's first year, so I look forward to more of that.
I hate to say it, but we won't be competing for a West title unless we can be as good as that five year stretch you cited to. A team 100% made up of 3 stars is not winning a division any time soon.

I post this at least once a year, but me want :chief: on the helmet. I guy can dream, can't he?
I like it! As long at is REAL BIG and covers the whole of each side. All that line, pattern and forced perspective it would be simultaneously arse-kickin’ and disorienting for the opponent.

Not to mention - no matter what you say or do - some people prefer to use vintage logos. This is not some Illinois exclusive event. I have seen people use the old Maryland logo from 2001.

Unfortunately, our “throwback” logo that actually ever gets used (the Block I with ILLINOIS) doesn’t exactly drum up nostalgia nor is it a fan favorite. If this were the Chief or even something earlier (like the script Illinois or something?), it’d be less annoying.

I get your point, though.

I'm mostly a FB lurker here and it is entirely a perception thing on my part, but it just feels like a similar type of program arc to BU's basketball program construction. I don't know if it is intentional or partially directed by JDubs....but it just has that feeling. Lumps for a few years (lets be honest...football rebuild much more complex/difficult)....then consistent recruiting wins with tangible gains on the field each year?

I'd be curious to hear BB's program vision/pitch to JW vs. JW's pitch to BB? They were obviously simpatico, but after the flashy splash hire in Lovie....the BB hire was a tenuous character hire that so far has turned out to be almost a polar opposite of the character worries some had.
Maybe not BB's "dream job", but the feel of "if you build it they will come"....kind of home.

Random thoughs.....I'll crawl back to my .gif hole now....

Great post for a FB lurker....

Agree with the dream job comment, but where would that be? Iowa? He gets things consistently rolling here, this will be a GREAT job.

Pretty clear how much Bret cares about these kids or at the very least knows how to recruit them. Maybe it's just the 180 turn from Lovie but man its so awesome listening to him talk about visiting and recruiting these guys. He definitely talks the talk of a proper college head coach.

Agree with others on him staying in his lane in terms of classes ranked in the 30-40 range, but also having better chances at Illinois. Arkansas Been in the 20-30 range before during and after Beilema, so it's not like he can't at least keep up recruiting (not that he has much to keep up here). My opinion on this is he'll at least be an average recruiter at Illinois in terms of talent rankings. It'll up to his staffs development to prove they can make the most out of them, which I think they will.

While true, Wisconsin doesn't have the fertile recruiting radius that UI does. Not saying BB will load classes with 4*, but we located much more centrally to CHI/STL/IND. If you're a believer that directionally distance matters in recruiting (I am), then BB should have more quality at-bats given our location
I personally think directionality and distance only really factor in for the <=3* where they take other things into consideration like education, distance to family, building sustainable in radius connections etcetera. I feel the 4*+ athletes have an expectation of success and a prerogative of finding the best chances and coaching. Those kids are always going to strive for the Saban's, the money, and beat chance to advance.

I think we will very likely aim and strive to be Wisconsin and Iowa where we win and develop on RB, OL, and DL kids ~3* level that eat good and work hard. We'll put some in the NFL but most will get in to coaching or use that UIUC degree to their benefit while cashing in on local celebrity.

Texas A&M has 25 in their #1 class, and only 1 person is outside the Top 500. The kicker. Do they have the recruiting rankings and only accept them if top 500?

Lots of good talent in state next year. Will be interesting to see what top1000 guys BB can get.

I’ve been in press conference withdrawal. I really enjoy listening to him talk football.

Realistically, outside of OSU, PSU and UM you can throw the remaining schools in the same bag. There just isn't that much difference between MSU or Rutgers and UI. For these schools, it comes down to player development, coaching and getting the right transfers
MSU is ranked between 15 to 20 this year, nationally.

It’s borderline shocking to me that Maryland has the #28 class and is dead last in the B10 East, while Iowa at #26 is by far the best of the West in 247 rankings

Locksley with 11 kids from maryland and virginia. Seems to be locking down the area and working his magic.

I've been active here since around the Juice/Mendenhal/Benn days and never felt like I really invested in anything but the on field results(not a grad or from the area just a fan). Bielema has me interested in a lot more areas than that.

Think he's really building something here that I hope will last.

According to the WCIA article there are 3 kids from Gibson City, each from a different school. Used to drive through there every trip between home and school (HWY 47). Had no idea that town had enough people to support three high schools.

When it comes to football stars aren't the end all. Lots of diamonds in the three star range. What we'll find out is how well this staff evaluates talent.

Transfer portal changes a lot as well

Bottom line is I like the class.

I'm not going to trash Lovie, always felt he loved his job and university. But I thought he made a huge mistake by gapping the defensive coordinator position.

At a time when he could improved upon on his initial coordinators and build recruiting he missed an oppurtunity to impact both.

His dislike of recruiting further hurt the progress if the program. BB looks to enjoy the recruiting and building ties. I'm not blown away with this class but appears to be higher ranked than previous 6-7 years. Hopefully with steady improvement we will see recruiting continue to improve
