I don't think it's fair to say they're out of control when what's really happening is players taking some of their autonomy back. It just means that players and coaches have to be on the same page prior to a commitment. That's probably better for both parties in the long run.
This. Coaches can't act as dictators anymore and that is going to take some adjusting at a lot of programs that aren't Duke/UK.

The real question is the definition of "sustained success". With the size of the Illini fan base, it can have several meanings. Mine would be "in contention" for a B1G title in the last two weeks every year. However, at my age, winning a NC is the goal. You need an All-America "type" of player to achieve that level of success and the kind of roster this team has....deep with many scorers and all dedicated to defending. This team will be be hard to improve upon as far as an ideal roster is concerned. I don't like the "one and done" guys as there is no time to build their skillset and develop team play. Love the 3 year guys like Ayo and Kofi and would adamantly prefer that the league opt to the same criteria for eligibility as baseball.
I agree that you need top-level talent that will play in the NBA to really make a tourney run. But I don't think it's realistic to rely primarily/solely on those types of guys to get you there. Hasn't happened since 2015. Better to have a structure of stand-up, high-level vets that you can plug the generational talent alongside, and in the case of the former, Trent is about as good as they come.

For recruiting purposes (put that in cuz I don’t know where to post this), where do y’all think BU ranks as a coach? The more I see of him, the more I love how he coaches, including how he has adapted and changed his style since Year 1. Am I crazy to suggest he might be a Top 10 or 12 coach in the country? Maybe he needs to win a couple tourney games first?

Gotta trust the staff. Definitely not pumped to be passing on a guy like Fears but his overly promotional self-branding as "The Floor General" always seemed odd. Perhaps it's a small thing emblematic of something bigger that us plebs have yet to see.

As a recruiter? Top 15-20ish. As for the overall package? The number of coaches in the country I would trade BU straight up for could probably be counted on one hand. Definitely not 10-12.

I'm not comparing them to other players as recruits. I'm comparing them to the type of player I think they will become.
Fair. But that's why I said prospect. Boswell is currently forecasted to be a better player than Deron was at the same stage.

Ames is a Kenwood student so that alone gives him a big boost for me. Lotta friends went there when I was in HS. BU has recruited the top guy from in-state 3 out of the last 5 years which compared to where we've been before that is incredible progress. Locking down the top in-state recruit should always be a priority.

Ok I've done some more Darrin Ames sleuthing, and all I can say is we need his commitment now. I'd read that he grew to 6'3". That would be great if true.

However, assuming the stats from his games I've found are true, I don't care if he grew. Sounds like he was injured or maybe got covid and missed the recent holiday tournament, but in 8 games this season I was able to find stats for, he's averaging:

24.3 ppg, 4.4 apg, 3.3 spg, 0.9 rpg (could use some work here), no listing on turnovers

but it is the shooting that has me excited. He's 42-62 from inside the arc (67.7%), 29-52 from 3 (55.8%), and 23-28 on FTs (82.1%).

If he can shoot even 40% from 3 in college thats a big time player. If he comes even close to flirting with 50%, that's a superstar.

One thing that's painfully obvious (see the last ten minutes of the first half of the last game) is that we need a 5 that has some semblance of an offensive game once Kofi leaves. Payne and BBV are not the answer and I have severe doubt they ever will be.

Not sure dainja can give us 30 mins of good offense at the 5 right away, I'd love to see another transfer 5.

Definitely a weird situation and the only situation I've seen in 8 years of following this board that we've cooled on a prospect rated so highly that seemingly wanted to come here. But I also trust the staff and understand the need for shooters. So I just hope we won't regret it because that regret would be front of mind if he's carving us up twice a year in the big ten
Yup

I don't totally agree. They need someone who can create offense when the is no Kofi. Having a healthy Curbelo goes a long way to fixing offensive struggles when Kofi isn't on the floor and it's just a bunch of shooters out there.

Based on salary he is a top10 coach. Comes in at number 9

IMO he is earning his salary

There's a potential transfer that the staff has in mind after the season-was not given a name but have heard it's a big time guard

I feel like Underwood and the team are basically destined to have a transfer as the transition post Kofi. Kofi's dominance combined with the NBA not really being made for him just makes it an odd decision especially with NIL on the table now. There is a decent chance playing at UofI is Kofi's highest expected income
I agree. Although it's unlikely Kofi returns for one final season (I'd love to see it) we have to be patient and see if he's a lock to be a first rounder and what his agent can put together for him in terms of endorsement money for one more season. NIL factors are a whole new sports landscape.
