I seriously could get drunk enough to go back and find some of those posts and start thread shaming!! (jk) (or am I?)

On one end of the court, yes. Plummer on defense with those other two small guards is going to be rough though (Belo and Trent both hold their own, of course).
There was more than one opportunity I saw when leaping defender attacking Plummer or Trent 3p shot...we need to learn to take/create that foul

I say that because when he can't physically dominate, he doesn't have enough of an offensive game nor is he explosive enough to be efficient. There was one play where Curbelo gave him a lob that should have been stuffed. Instead, he brought it down and he got stuffed. He brings the ball down and gets tied up. Against Arizona and Purdue (teams with quality bigs), he's gone 8 for 24 and got a lot of shots sent back at him or ends up throwing up a circus shot.

I love Kofi and I'd take him on my team all day, every day. HOWEVER, when playing against other high quality bigs, his game is so one dimensional (power ball), that when it's negated....he struggles. Offense shouldn't run through him, as much as it does, especially with AC back.

Seriously...you need to go back and watch last years PU games. Kofi was outmatched because he was punished for his physicality while Edey was rewarded for his, as was Williams. It was 3 on 1..with 2 of those having almost total control of how you play.

Edey is not better than Kofi...and he never will be. He's 7'4". He got rewarded for it. Along with some other factors that I will refrain from mentioning.

I realize I have completely destroyed this drum I'm beating, and I hate "it was the refs!"....because it wasn't all "the refs!"...but it was the refs.

If we have Kofi rolling to the basket with Curbelo for 10+ more minutes in the second half...this game doesn't go to OT.
This is mostly where I’m at. And if you’re Kofi, how can you not be frustrated—he’s playing guys as physically as they play against him but he gets whistled and they don’t.

He will benefit the most if/when Curbelo continues to progress and reintegrate into an already very good team. He deserves some easy rolls for dunks. I do not envy Marylands front line come Friday because he’s out for souls.

The last sentence I agree 100% with. AC being back should make Kofi much more dangerous because he can break down a defense.

It wasn't that lopsided by the end. You can't blame this one on the officials. This was a really good and hard fought game where we had little room for error. Needed Kofi still in the game late, but some of his fouls were silly on his part.
Not sure what you were looking at, but a 32-15 FT disadvantage on your home court looks like fecal matter . . . smells like fecal matter . . . and . . .someone else can do the taste test. Some silly fouls on our part, but some atrocious officiating, especially in the first half.

CoHawk suffering from the flu didn't help either. I would've expected significant minutes from him against Ivey and without him in the rotation, it clearly hurts. Can't wait for a full strength rematch.

Kind of get a kick out of all the complaining on ref calls. I would bet my life that none of those posts come from anyone who has ever refereed a B1G game between two teams of this ilk. Of course, there never has been a game like this between two teams with this much size, speed, and quickness. It is extremely difficult.

I will say this, you will never see a game where every call is correct, and likely, 99% of us will never understand what the correct calls are. I sure don't, and I have played organized hoops for 35 years, been trained in correct officiating, and even called a few games. I had a friend who was an official and called games in the MVC and B1G for decades. First of all, they all take pride in making the correct call. Secondly, some calls have to be interpreted by what is seen and they can NEVER be seen from all angles by anyone. Finally, timing is critical. They know they miss things....and they know they are affected by crowd noise and momentum. Bottom line, they always make calls in real time by what they see. Replay has helped them get things right in some cases, but will not, at this time, and maybe never, allow that in real time. The only problem I ever have with officials are those who like the spotlight....and those are less and less prevalent as review and renew committees are weeding them out. It is a thankless job, but overall, is filled by a pretty admirable bunch of people.

Great post, thank you for sharing. I used to challenge the "bad officiating cost us the game" posts here but gave it up years ago. I have not officiated basketball, but did work high school and college football for 30 years and you hit some very salient points here. The armchair experts on this board are every bit as delusional and wrong about what is happening at Illinois basketball (and football) games as they were in my games. Officials do not care who wins or loses, they are not negatively influenced by crowd pressure or even coaching input (especially at the D1 level), and they try to get every call right. Counting fouls/penalties/free throws and claiming a difference in the totals indicates officiating bias is just plain wrong- one team committed more fouls than the other, period. Fouls call themselves, the officials just blow the whistle/throw the flag and identify the culprit and associated penalty. After 30 years I am cynical enough to recognize that fans will never understand let alone appreciate any of it.

And I agree with you about those officials who make it to much about themselves. I've never appreciated TV Ted Valentine's "style" and don't get how MLB umpires interact with coaches and players. Know the rules, use good mechanics, call what you see and see what you call, Get The Big Ones, Make It Be There.

GO ILLINI!

besides trent/grandy/plummer driving

Fouls arent only on shooters.

Damonte got hip checked out of bounds with no call, plummer got hip checked on the game tying bucket.

We got called for BS such as damonte standing straight up while ivey fades away from him after initiating contact. I dont think anyone is saying we should have the exact same amount, just call the ones they missed.

Also purdue only shot 6 more 2 pointers than us
DMW was standing straight up, but of his heels were inside the arc, or whatever that line is called.

The refs and the ultimate end result is not going to take away from how proud I was of our guys today. Fought like hell and never gave up. Curbelo will grab the headlines (deservedly so) and Trent has had his fair share this season, but I feel so lucky that we've been able to have Monte on our team for 5 years (I know I may be repeating myself here...don't care). Always has the hardest job on the court and the one with the least fanfare, is always giving up either height or speed or girth to his opponent, and yet does his job impeccably. And today we were able to have two DMWs on the court, with BBV giving his best impression in the big man spot.

Zach Lowe has an annual column where he nominates his "Luke Walton All-Stars," or those guys that play a limited, defined role (in the NBA) and do it with excellence. I think BU should start a DMFW award that he gives out each season (or even game) to the guy(s) that play their role as well as Monte has over his 5 years here.

For me, the absolute worst/dumbest/most ridiculous/horrible call was the ref on the baseline calling DMFW when that Purdon’t guy turned into him.

Please, explain to me HOW that ref was in a position to make that call.

THEn explain to me what the foul was.

The only POSSIBLE foul was Damontè did not allow the opponent to do whatever he wanted.

SO, obviously, *WHISTLE*!
