It will never be consistent to people's satisfaction. Not everyone's... ANYONE'S. If refs make correct calls 96% of the time, the only part people will remember is the 4% that were messed up and the 20% additional that people THINK was messed up, even if it wasn't. Then they'll look at FT disparity and claim that it was unfair for their team. In a highly contested, highly emotional game with highly subjective rules, the refs will never come out looking good by more than 20% of the fan base. Every fan base thinks that they're being treated unfairly by the refs compared to the other team. The winners will stay 'Stop crying' or 'they're blowing call on both sides'.

Since THAT's the only thing that's consistent about officiating, then the only thing that can really change is our perception and reaction.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good. The goal should be 100% consistency, even i though it's not achievable. Just writing off terrible calls and not holding officials accountable for doing their jobs is not the solution. Software bugs are inevitable but you don't just throw your hands up and go, eh, i just need to change my perception of that power plant shutting down for a week. You take steps to mitigate potential failures in the development and operational processes to minimize their occurrence and impact.

But.... But..... refereeing is a tough job. It's hard to see an elbow at 7' tall. It's waaay up there.

There were at least 3 different elbows Kofi took to the grill or head. At 7'4", that put Edey's elbows at prime face shot level. And he was swinging them freely.
Edey is nothing but elbows when he gets the ball in the post.

A couple of thoughts:
1) 100% consistent does not equal 100%. It is reasonable to expect consistency to approach 100% while 100% accuracy is impossible. Remember in the first five minutes or so, the a announcers were extolling how the refs were really letting them play, this is Big Ten basketball. Boy, that sure disappeared.
2) In his post game interview, Matt Painter stated that a foul could have been called on both teams on every possession. So since he is the expert, it's reasonable to expect that the actual fouls called should be distributed closer to equal in a "consistently" called game.
3) I saw at least 3 plays where BBV should have been called for foul based on the way way fouls were being called on Kofi and OP. Why the difference? Maybe that was the way these refs made makeup calls...
4) Illinois got limited minutes from 3 of their top 6 players. I'm highly encouraged by that. Hopefully we'll get to a point where we get some "consistency" 😉 with the lineup.
5) Was the OP transgression really that much more egregious than the elbow to the head that gave Kofi a concussion?
6) Usually when there is a large discrepancy in fouls called you can most times see a marked difference in talent or aggression between the two teams. I don't think that's the case here...at all.
7) Again, those individuals arguing that refs are human, fallible, et al, are missing the point: be consistantly good or consistently bad, but just be consistent.

All that being said, I love this team and staff. Cheers!

I guess what I'm getting at, and where I feel the point is being missed is that it won't matter what changes were made to this game or any other game. If the FT's were 16-16, if the fouls were exactly the same, if they played it hard in one half and not hard enough in the other is that it won't be satisfactory. We gripe about the FT disparity in this game, if we had won the game, the Purdue fans would take THE EXACT SAME stats and complain that BBV didn't get called for enough fouls and that Kofi fouling out was perfectly justified because it helped their team, or... pick something. EVERYONE can gripe about the officials, and EVERYONE would be right. And be wrong. And the more I see an onslaught of 'We lost the game because of unfair officiating (not just the Purdue game, but any game)', the more it feels like sour grapes.

I personally think Kofi got hacked by Edey's elbows and it didn't get called. And I think that BBV got hacked by Edey and it didn't get called. And if 10,000 people saw the exact same play, there would be a lot more even set of sides saying different things. And it happens all game, every game, every team, all season, every season. There will be 4% of those plays where the 10,000 people will all be on the same side that the official got wrong. And the other 96% will split between those the call benefitted and those it hurt.

I am not advocating we let lousy officiating go, and trust that all sides are doing what they can to send the crap calls to the league office for evaluation, and that it will affect their job status, raises, marquee games, etc. But the only 'consistency' when it comes to officiating is that the overwhelming majority is going to be unhappy with it, no matter what is called and what is not called. In every game. In every sport.

Did you ever notice when you're riding your bike into a heavy wind how much you notice it and how frustrating it is, but when you're riding the same bike with a heavy wind you really don't? That's sports officiating.

Basketball is a difficult sport to officiate. That's the short of it. So is football.

Baseball on the other hand. Im not sure why that can't be better.

If the refs do get 3000 to call a game , they should be better than they are.
