Purdue 84, Illinois 68 Postgame

I was hoping we could steal a win in West Lafayette. Not at all shocked that we lost, but was hoping it could be competitive from start to finish, especially in front of a national audience. We have played 4 halves of basketball vs. the Boilers this season. The first 3 were highly-competitive, back-and-forth, exhilerating-to-watch skirmishes between two very good teams. The last half was one very good team (Purdue) playing nearly flawless offensively and the other very good team (Illinois) struggling to get any open shots to go down. I thought some of Purdue's bench guys stepped up and made some key plays for them. Hunter killed us at the beginning of the second half. And Ivey was very impressive. When we were unable to answer the game got out of control pretty quickly.

You aren't going to beat any team in the country having that shooting disparity in the second half.

What's worse is this is the one team in the B10 you can't easily force feed Kofi to get easy looks. Notice how there was not a single post-entry to Kofi from the top of the key in the second half (something we ran like a hundred times against IU).

After sitting on this overnight, my primary feeling is: oh well. They're better than us. More talented than us. Might be the best team in all of college basketball. That second half was reminiscent of the second half of the Baylor game -- just put their foot on our throat for five minutes and the game was already over. Upside is, even though we're clearly not the better team, we can still come out on top of the B1G. Would love to see that happen for so many different reasons, but it would also make up for being in Purdue's spot last year (best team in B1G) and not coming out with the regular season title.

I don't think I've laughed so hard watching a basketball game as when that happened.
And then we got the pleasure to enjoy it again (and maybe a few DVR rewinds) in slow motion. It's well document my love for DMFW, but that will be a play I fondly remember forever.

The cold shooting from 3 and Ivey's success in the second half are related I believe. When Illinois did not make the 3's it allowed Purdue to push the offense before Illinois was back on defense as much as they would be if it were a made basket or a missed layup. Ivey was able to free lance in this situation more than he would have been able to against a set defense. He is still hard to stop with a set defense but he has to work much harder and Illinois could do a better job of stopping him and making him work if the defense was not in a transition mode. As it was, much of the second half for him was like layup drills.

Because the shots weren't dropping
Yep. In the second half, they effectively shut off our safety valve (Kofi) and we couldn't respond well enough with our outside shooting. We had a ton of good looks, but just couldn't get them to drop. It also seems like Belo still needs more time to get back up to speed.

We have a lot of work to do this month.

What do y’all think of Kofi’s over-his-head pass attempt when he was trapped at the baseline? Do you think he should take that one out of his arsenal?

Also… Belo has become my favorite for myriad reasons, and he had a good game overall. But he somehow managed to play 21 minutes without an assist. Wonder when’s the last time that happened…

We will be fine. My guess is that we’ll see another new banner or two in the rafters after this season.

I had to go back and watch that a second time. I love Kofi, and he battled last night and as others have said here it's encouraging that he had a better 2nd game vs. Purdue than his first, but that play was hard to watch. Seemed like Kofi almost just gave up. Just call a timeout at that point. You aren't the first player to be trapped and have no way out of it. Purdue's second half yesterday was a thing of beauty....unless, of course, you are like all of us here as diehard Illini fans.

Only other thing from the postgame I still was looking to hear was if there was a final answer to what Underwood and Painter were discussing. ESPN cut away from that pretty quick. I think in the past that BU has been pretty complimentary of Painter, though I'm sure both coaches can perhaps sense this is going to be quite a fight in the years going forward at the top of the Big Ten and can get under each other's skin, especially with the nonsense going on with the shot clock.

Lol got second hand embarrassment for Kofi on that pass. It happens. One of the few silly plays he's made in his entire career.

I'm with you on the Belo love. I posted this elsewhere, but despite having zero assists, I thought he was still doing a decent job of getting guys the ball in a position to score. They just didn't convert. And with their ball screen coverage, the smarter play most of the time was to keep the ball for a layup rather than pass.

What the heck happened on that? It looked like it got poked out?? It was so weird to watch.

I thought Belo played well, especially offensively.

That sucked. I find Purdue to be just as dislikable as Indiana and Iowa.

However there isn't a harder game left on the schedule in the regular season. Won't be easy, but I could be convinced we win out.
I don't know about that.... Unless our shooting improves quite a bit, I can see wins at Rutgers and the Spartan's being very tough to get. The Bucky's at home might be a problem too. Here's to hoping our veteran back court can do their thing and lead us to the promised land!!

I have respect for Stefanovich. After Trent went down, he came over to Trent on the bench to make sure that he was ok. I don't have any respect for a coach that knows that the game is decided, sees the losing coach clearing the bench, then doesn't do the same and let's them shoot. Bush league! No excuses for it!
You realize kofi and our starters were in against Wisconsin and Indiana both double digit wins.
