I'm pretty excited, though admittedly also a little nervous, for tomorrow. Watching BU's press conference, both he and the fanbase seem to be on the same page about our intensity recently. Undoubtedly, he's sent the team a message. Now it's up to them to respond. I have faith that we will. We have too much senior leadership with too much experience to let this thing crash and burn.

We're also, frankly, not that far removed from playing one of our best games of the season at Indiana. We did just about everything right in a hostile environment on an early Saturday afternoon. Bring that same intensity. Get back on track. Then there's only one thing left to do.

It's mid-February with the conference title on the line every game. If BU still needs to be "sending a message" at this point in the season, color me worried.

Yea....inconsisetent play (great game Indiana....1/2 good game NW....really poor game Rutgers).....out rebound Rutgers by 16 I think in first game at home, nearly have them double up on us in rebounds in 2nd game....possible line up changes....extended scoring droughts....not what we really want to be taking about as we enter the last 4-5 games of regular season

In a typical year, I'd be way more worried than I am now. We've had such a disjointed season, with so many missed practices, that it's not that surprising we're going through a funk. I still think there's time for the message to get through and for us to figure things out. Though, admittedly, I tend to be an optimist.

'Cause there's everything about which to be optimistic. (y):illinois:

Anyone who isn't more than a little worried is whistling in the dark or an unbelievable optimist. I am somewhere in between. I like to think of BU as that velvet hammer. It's pretty clear he has let certain players know that their effort has been lacking. But he'll be the first guy to put an arm around that player's shoulder while he gives instruction. Winning teams have a clear leader on the floor. I don't care if it is Kofi or Trent, but seize that role.

It would also help if BU showed clips of last year's "common foul" committed on Kofi and Flagrant 2 foul committed on Ayo.

Two Friday night thoughts from a middle-aged guy:

(1) I have come to loathe Izzo and MSU since the hit on Ayo;

(2) I'm reminded of legendary Minnesota Gophers coach Herb Brooks' taunting of his players on the 1980 U.S. gold medal-winning Olympic hockey team: "You're playing worse every day and right now you're playing like the middle of next month."

I thought of that latter quote today when reflecting on the Illini's most recent ~ 50 minutes of basketball. BU is a Herb Brooks kinda guy, which is one among many reasons why I'm delighted he's our man.

I'm betting the boys take the floor with some fire tomorrow. To quote Brooks: "I'm asking you to go to the well again."

The thing to remember is the hit on Kofi was late. The whistle had blown when he started making his move.

The head shot on Ayo was well after the whistle. No call for him to do anything. Chump should have been suspended from the conference!
Wasn’t the foul that was called was originally called a common foul?

My disgust for Izzo started years ago when he took to the mic and criticized Illinois for firing Weber. It grew with all the sexual assault accusations and the coverup that occurred with it.

Actual archival footage of a young Brad Underwood warming up, pre-street brawl …outside a Pizza Hut In McPherson, KS

EDIT: Clearly the girl in the background (with what looks to be an iPhone) is some sort of time traveler…sent back in time to debunk the authenticity of this very authentic footage. Pay it no mind…it is merely a disinformation campaign by evil
corporations of the future…headed by Michigan drop-outs of the present.

I'm gonna drive to Champaign tomorrow........ even though the game is in East Lansing, then get out and look around cluelessly like John Travolta in Pulp Fiction (and most of our team yesterday).

Because it's all bassackwards right now.

Dear Illini Basketball Diary,

Since we have hustled for the ball.
It’s been awhile…
Since Grandison hit multiple threes.
It’s been awhile…
Since a new Da’Monte hawt take.
It’s been awhile…
Since BU’s visited a Pizza Hut

And everything that Brad remembers
Circles to brawls in parking lots
Illinois needs to come out fighting
competing for a complete game

Izzo was fired up in his press conference.

Brad was fired up in his press conference.

We are in for a good one Saturday!!!

By the way.... Find you someone who loves you like Izzo loves Trent Frazier.
I know, this is gonna be so good. :) :)
Here’s a random thought. Does anyone
else think Izzo looks like Hoffa?

(Apologies if this question was posed on the forum at some point in the past.)

We need the win badly. I actually like our chances. First of all, I can't imagine another 1 for 14 outcome in either half against MSU from the arc. Second, Plummer disappeared against Rutgers; I don't see that happening again. Finally, this time MSU will have to deal with Kofi. That wasn't the case in our earlier game.

That’s an average. When we are having a 1 for 13 night, a little adjustment just might be a good idea ?
Wish GRANDison would of took another 3 after he made the one -get on some kind of a roll
He has hit some timely baskets

Paducah, Ky

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — There was only one way for Brad Underwood to describe Illinois’ most recent outing.
“We went to the Pizza Hut parking lot and they kicked our !!!,” Underwood said.
A 70-59 loss to Rutgers was a night where Illinois got outplayed, and had Underwood referring back to growing up in Kansas and his hometown’s spot for a neighborhood brawl.
“We just lined up and turned the car lights on and had some fun,” Underwood said. “See if we can get bloodied up a little bit. It was never good when you woke up in the morning and mom asked you what happened.”
The answer to what happened to Illinois on Wednesday was a beatdown at the hands of the hottest team in the conference. The loss seemed to be a breaking point after a recent stretch of sluggish play against Northwestern and Purdue where a continued shooting slump combined with a poor showing on the boards.

Now, the No. 12 Illini (18-7, 11-4 Big Ten) have another fight ahead of them when they travel to East Lansing to play No. 19 Michigan State (18-7, 9-5) at 11 a.m. Saturday.....“You know what, we’re gonna get up and we’re gonna go again and if you guys have ever been in a street fight, you know sometimes you get your butt kicked,” Underwood said. “What are you gonna do, lay down and take it? No. We’re gonna fight back and that’s what we are.”

As I did with the last MSU game, I'm turning a little pessimistic. (It worked then, so hopefully it works again!)

Not liking the chemistry on our team right now. Something's not clicking and we don't look like a well-oiled machine. We really don't run a fun and entertaining "made for prime-time TV offensive scheme." And our 3-point shooting has fallen from 45% (Top 8 in the nation) down to 36%. I guess that means we're probably shooting under 30% during that collapse.

Add to this the fact we're playing a top 20 club; who's a perrenial Top 2 team in the conference; that loves to get out on the break and run the floor; on their home court; and they're led by a future HOF Divsision 1 head coach.

76 MSU
69 ILLINI

Maybe a line-up change or two will help!
