I love how the men in the courtside seats are wearing jackets and ties, and sitting with their hands folded on their laps, as if they're at the symphony. (Courtesy of SI)

This is an interesting observation and something that we are seeing change right before our eyes. Just look at the game day attire of head coaches in 2019 vs 2022. Goodbye suits and hello sweat pants. The continuing "casualification" of society is real and even goes beyond dress, and I'm not entirely opposed to it.

Whats Next???

BU sidelined for two games suffering from gout.

Former Cardinal Matt Holiday missed a week when his appendix was taken out. He was not put on disable list. Just depends on what type of surgery was performed.

On that topic, I was on a business trip in the late '90s with my boss, who had graduated in '68. We were talking about casual dress, as our corporate HQ had just instituted "casual Fridays," which caused a negative stir among the elders. He noted that when he was in college in the northeast in the mid-to-late '60s the students wore jackets and ties to the football games. He said he went back for a game in '71 and all of a sudden none of the students were wearing that.

I filed that away. Many years later I saw footage of the epic Michigan-Ohio State game in '69, Schembechler's first year, when Michigan pulled the "upset of the century." Most of the students I could see in the background in Michigan Stadium were wearing coats and ties.

1970 seemed to be some sort of break point for casual dress among the young at college sporting events.

1969 and 2020: two years of widespread protests and social upheaval. The result? More casual dress standards at sporting events. I expect that the next wave of mass demonstrations around the year 2070 will result in coaches wearing Big Bird costumes.

When I was in grad school at Wake Forest in the early 80's, the male students still wore coat and tie to football games. It was fun!

Speaking of ashtrays and polyester, here are some photos from the final game in Iowa Field House in 1982 v. Minnesota, for the Big Ten title. With Lute Olson at the helm, Iowa shanked it in 3OT and the Gophers won. A little Randy Breuer / Trent Tucker Gopher action in the second one. I love how the men in the courtside seats are wearing jackets and ties, and sitting with their hands folded on their laps, as if they're at the symphony. (Courtesy of SI)

If I'm not mistaken, Mark Gannon (Iowa forward) was called for a very controversial foul at the buzzer, and Minn won by FT's with no time on the clock.

Then on 1-3-83, they lost inaugural home game at the new Carver Hawkeye arena to MSU. An up and down season for the Hawkeyes who had some really great talent. Reached sweet 16 but lost by a point to Villanova. Was a mercy since Villanova then played against Phi Slamma Jamma.
