I'm sure this has been shared at some point, but I just saw this highlight reel for TSJ and it got me *really* excited about the prospect of him donning the orange n blue, so I thought I'd share:

Dude looks like a beast.
dumb and dumber yes GIF

(Opinion) Kofi coming back would be because he can get handsomely paid through NIL and record chase. Absolutely nothing wrong with either of those being primary motivators.
If he comes back he's a virtual lock for the all time rebounding record and has a very good chance at Deon's all time points record (he'd tie it by scoring 2 fewer points than he did this season - and he missed 3 games due to suspension, and missed a couple due to injury).

I have to imagine that kind of record chase also provides some unique NIL opportunities as well.

My assumption has been that a player can stay and keep the schollie if their services are no longer “appreciated” but that they might convert to an academic scholarship and the player won’t be on the team. But since in nearly every case a player wants to continue playing that the reasonable choice is to move on. Does that sound about right?
There was a big todo related to trying to force a scholarship player onto an academic scholarship at NW a few years back. The player balked at the transition saying they said that they were promised a 4 year athletic scholarship, and the academic scholarship did not provide the same level of services. The academic scholarships gave access to additional facilities, meals, etc.. It got ugly. There were claims that the administration tampered with student work records and then used the tampered records to try and prove that the athlete was not meeting their obligations. I think that it came out that every time an independent party investigated, it looked like the student was telling the truth. It was ugly enough that I wasn't sure Collins would survive.

This moved Collins from my damn he's done a good job (for NW) list to my what a slimeball list.

Our team is very young - adding upperclassmenfrom the transfer portal would be a plus. Calling TSJ. Alphonso was ready to go from day one

FR - Harris Epps Rodgers
SO - Goode Melendez Pods Dainja
JR - Hawkins
SR - Payne (2 yrs elig)

No idea why somebody would transfer over playing time. We are losing 5 starters - Kofi, DaMonte, Jacob, Trent Alphonso plus Andre who averaged 20 mpg.

Returning

Coleman 19 mpg
RJ 8 mpg
Luke 9 mpg
Omar 7 mpg
Brandin 4 mpg
A lot of inaccurate info in this post.

Kofi coming back makes everyone else better. I think its a long shot but I was not expecting him to return last year.

He can improve his NBA draft stock in lot of ways
-- Quick outlet pass to trigger the fast break
-- Feeding open shooters when he gets doubled
-- Taking the open mid range jumper if not guarded
-- improve free throw shooting
Dude it's a longer shot that he leaves.....

Is it just me that thinks that RJ Melendez is similar to TSJ? Same size, athletic, can shoot… don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I don’t want TSJ, I’d be more than happy to get him
Why would't you want 3 or4 guys on the court like that? It gives you so many options offensively and defensively, Brad would like to be able to switch everything defensively like Baylor and Houston.

Sweet mother of ... he's gonna entertain us with those breakaway left hand dunks!

Kofi is not going to play in the NBA. Watch the NBA, nobody has a 7 foot center that cannot shoot 3's. He may as well get his NLI money and return for another year.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope that Kofi returns, but there are some bigs in the league that are kinda like Kofi. Andre Drummond, Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan to name a few. Not near as many as there were a decade ago, but there might be an opportunity for him to be a backup center and get about 10 minutes per game as a banger in the future.

This creates some fun ideas: Some type of $100k+ bonuses connected with breaking all-time records. I'm sure Illinois could also make some pitches of things they could do "down the road" for accolades.

But there are a handful of 6’10” guys who cannot shoot free throw or threes. They just have to be elite rim protectors and/or rebounders.

Clint Capella
Mitchell Robinson
Steven Adams
Andre Drummond

Might only be 30-50 roster spots, but Kofi could grab one of those if he shows some improvement in those areas. That’s his path to getting drafted in my opinion. Forget threes. Keep improving shot blocking and going to get rebounds that are out of his area.

There are a dozen NBA Centers that average 20 minutes or more, who have not attempted a 3 pointer this season.

That said, there is nothing guaranteed in the NBA. He can't declare again and change his mind. Based on that, i think he may say:

Is there reason to believe that if TSJ came here, he would be eligible to play next season? Or would it be a 23-24 pickup? The last few years of transfer bedlam has really thrown off my understanding of how this all works, but he doesn't seem to be a grad transfer right? Isn't that the only way to avoid sitting out with the NCAA granting a special waiver (lol)?

I think that Kofi adding a 3 point shot as a possibility would be a game changer. Its hard to justify as a coach to have your 7 foot dominant post player do that...but it would be personally beneficial to him. And perhaps if we have some additional size out on the floor we can get a larger share of offensive boards even if Kofi is shooting a few 3s a game(or hell...maybe he'll just make them all?). That being said I have yelled at my tv about how stupid Hunter D is when he gets carried away shooting them instead of going inside for Michigan...and I love seeing those guys fail.

I think the best comp for Kofi in the league is probably Udoka Azukuike...but he's behind Gobert and the guy keeps getting hurt so its hard to tell what kind of impact he could have. When he has played, though, he's done pretty well. Kofi needs to commit to improving his outside shooting or his rim protection and then he will have a good NBA career.

Isn’t DeAndre Jordan still in the league? Javelle McGee?

I get the point you are making. They’re outliers, but so is Kofi. I wouldn’t say never.

Im guessing players have to check social media more often with potential NIL opportunities, just hope the players remember most of the fans have their back. Any fan base is going to have the guys that bash players, illinois just happens to have a ton of fans on social.

One time transfer exception applies unless I'm missing something.

The 3/4 guard lineup is out, the 3/4 wing lineup is in.

Makes sense if you think about it, so many wings these days have well rounded skillsets and can shoot, so everything else being equal, taller/longer is always better, especially defensively.

They both definitely have some similar qualities - long, athletic, can get to the rim, solid jump shooters. I would consider TSJ a big guard and RJ a wing. But that's just splitting hairs at that point. TSJ is also already a proven terrific 2-way player. RJ definitely has that potential and has shown great flashes with his length on the defensive end but is still less proven for obvious reasons.

A potential lineup of:

Clark/Epps/transfer guard
TSJ
RJ
Hawkins/Goode/stretch 4 transfer
Kofi

really gets me going... it really does.

Question is how does it compare with:
Trent/Belo
Alph/?
DaMonte
Jake/Hawk
Kofi/Omar
Weaker defensively at 1 and 3, stronger at 2, 4 and 5? And the real issue is the amount of time our best lineup was injury free this year. Also hope that Dain is an important part of the 4/5 rotation. Could be a real weapon beside Kofi.
