Different position, but yes, I'd say Shannon, Jr. is a better all-around player than Grandy. If Hawkins doesn't return, I think they'll still need to find a stretch 4.From a complete basketball player stand point, it seems like TSJ would be an upgrade over Grandison? Same point production but more athletic and a better defender?
Probably a notch below Grandy in 3 point shooting, but much more capable of creating his own shot and finishing at the rim. From a complete basketball player stand point, it seems like TSJ would be an upgrade over Grandison? Same point production but more athletic and a better defender?
I'd say that's fair. I'd also say Brad probably wants multiple guys in that mold on the court together. Is it just me that thinks that RJ Melendez is similar to TSJ? Same size, athletic, can shoot… don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I don’t want TSJ, I’d be more than happy to get him
They both definitely have some similar qualities - long, athletic, can get to the rim, solid jump shooters. I would consider TSJ a big guard and RJ a wing. But that's just splitting hairs at that point. TSJ is also already a proven terrific 2-way player. RJ definitely has that potential and has shown great flashes with his length on the defensive end but is still less proven for obvious reasons. Is it just me that thinks that RJ Melendez is similar to TSJ? When the 1988-89 flying Illini went to Ann Arbor, they more or less crushed the Wolverines on their senior day. Bill Frieder was quoted complaining “which damn one was that dunking on us now?”Is it just me that thinks that RJ Melendez is similar to TSJ? A potential lineup of:
Clark/Epps/transfer guard
TSJ
RJ
Hawkins/Goode/stretch 4 transfer
Kofi
really gets me going... it really does.
I would be horrified as a transition defender with Clark/Epps running at me with the ball with TSJ and RJ flying down the wings.I am so here for the TSJ/RJ show. Because I think it will be a show.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves on this one.Our team is very young - adding upperclassmenfrom the transfer portal would be a plus. Calling TSJ. Alphonso was ready to go from day one
FR - Harris Epps Rodgers
SO - Goode Melendez Pods Dainja
JR - Hawkins
SR - Payne (2 yrs elig)
No idea why somebody would transfer over playing time. We are losing 5 starters - Kofi, DaMonte, Jacob, Trent Alphonso plus Andre who averaged 20 mpg.
Returning
Coleman 19 mpg
RJ 8 mpg
Luke 9 mpg
Omar 7 mpg
Brandin 4 mpg
Would be nice to see TSJ and RJ in the game together.TSJ would give us that athletic slasher who can get to the rim and finish we were missing this year, that is for sure. His shooting numbers are a plus as well - with someone like Kofi drawing so much attention it could really open things up for a guy like him

Dale Brown at LSU also said that. When the 1988-89 flying Illini went to Ann Arbor, they more or less crushed the Wolverines on their senior day. Bill Frieder was quoted complaining “which damn one was that dunking on us now?”
(Always good to have a bunch of 6-6 athletic wings in your team)
Well that was fun! Definitely one of the missing pieces.I'm sure this has been shared at some point, but I just saw this highlight reel for TSJ and it got me *really* excited about the prospect of him donning the orange n blue, so I thought I'd share:
Dude looks like a beast.
At work there's no ambiguity. I'll just point to the photo over my desk taken at the moment the boys won the title last month:Having reasons to be optimistic will do that to a person. For anyone who was an Illini fan during the most recent ‘The Great Regret’ era... these times today are fun and energizing. We may not yet be at the level of the remaining Final Four legacy programs that much of America is seriously tired of seeing already. But we’re getting closer every day.
And as for laughing out loud and letting others hear that... any time a person can find joy these days is a reason to celebrate. And if you get asked why are you so happy... you might explain why Illinois ball is so much fun and you just might make a new Illini fan for the future.
