Is an interesting topic. It seems like you are saying this is what TSJ needs to do if he wants to finish his degree. Or are you saying he MUST finish his degree if he is to land in the Illini camp. Can anyone contractually stipulate the latter?

He does not have to finish his degree to my knowledge. Think it would be a slippery slope if that were to be stipulated.

Doesn't HAVE to finish here, it's just that it would take 2 years to get the degree. As opposed to some other schools, where he might be able to get it in 1. If he doesn't care, it's a non-issue. But if he's concerned about getting the degree in 1 year, Illinois is obviously at a disadvantage.

Curious . . . Would there be any players out there willing to forego a scholarship if there's enough NIL money to be made? Wanting to join a team that's out of available scholarships?
Interesting question. I would think its possible, but if they're good enough to be in line for NIL $$$, I'd think finding -someone- on the roster to bump would happen.

Isn't every student on a year-to-year commitment to return to the university, from an acdemic perspective?

This commitment to finish before admission seems like a silly concept

No comparisons here, ofc, but MJ went back to school later and finished his degree.

If you’re the type of player making that level of NIL $$$ do you really think you’d do that at a school not giving you one of the scholarships? No chance.
If I squint enough, I can envision a transfer doing it say after 3-4 years making tons of dough and joining another program in hopes of getting a natty.. I expect they would be the exception to the rule tho.

Yeah, it's really dependent on TSJ point of view. He has 2 years of eligibility anyway, so if he can't get to the league after one year he could return, play another year and get his degree. Of course, I'm sure his dream is to head to the NBA after next year. (or, like you said finish his degree at a later time after basketball)

Illinois staff Phone call to Terrance Shannon...

Hi Terrance - Illinois would love to have you in uniform for 22-23. We think you are a key missing piece and chance to come home to finish out your college years. However, our admissions require that you spend 4 semesters to graduate.

Hello...Hello.... Not sure but it seems like the call was dropped.

Well their course selections are quiet extensive....so much so...that they at times offer courses that don't even exist and don't require attendance...now tell me...how can we compete with that????

What is the actual holdup with TSJ and Sky? Was hoping for both commitments by now. Now hoping we get at least one of them.

I realize we may have a few holes to fill. But all this hype about portal recruits is getting to be a bit much. Skyy is one I can understand since he is not a portal but is fresh out of high school. Kofi has to know by now what he wants to do. Grandy is waiting in the wings to decide based upon what portal transfers we may or may not get. Payne is freaking out because if he must transfer, he'll probably have to sit out a year. Illinois' first priority has to remain with who they already have.

The longer it drags out with Clark and Shannon, the more I think it is about the $$'s

In Clarks's case, I think Louisville is trying to get a win for the new coaching staff. For Shannon, if Kentucky thinks they need him and really go after him, I would think it would be hard to outbid them.

Someone mentioned that TSJ was an honor student in HS. Based on that, one would assume earning a degree would be important to him. This would explain why “credits” might be an issue. If he’s on schedule to graduate early, or even on time… this could be a major issue for him.

Do people like you make accounts just to make up random nonsense to stir the pot?
