Mark Few, the up-and-comer.
He was a bust in the nba and could easily come back to college. The question is if he wants toI keep waiting for somebody to hire John Beilein. he was ridiculously successful at Michigan.
Feels to me that if he wanted to, he would have by now. Pushing 70 is a hard sell as a college coach to start back into it.He was a bust in the nba and could easily come back to college. The question is if he wants to
Agreed. Born (1980) and raised in Champaign. Grew up going to and watching Illinois games with my dad who is an alumnus. I went to school out of state, but have ALWAYS rooted/cheered for Illinois as my #1 college team.Literally … so? Lol. No one is saying RG was worthless, but he was a small time thinker. He trained a GENERATION of people to associate the Illini with (only) Central Illinois, and the local big-fish-small-pond types were cool with it, and it made Illini Athletics behave like a private university - elite alumni only, others need not apply! If one can’t realize how damaging that is psychologically to our sports, I can’t explain it further. There are zero reasons kids from Rockford to Cairo shouldn’t grow up such huge Illini fans that they cheer for them even after they attend Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, etc …. and people in our state don’t look at it that way. Say what you want about “pro sports,” but RG was instrumental in perpetuating that perspective.
I was born in Peoria. Parents went to NIU, moved us to Iowa City when I was 8 and I went to Iowa ($$$) and DePaul for school. Know why I’m an Illini fan?? Because I’ve loved our teams since I was a little kid, as my dad did. Because I’m an Illinoisan. I think it’s awesome most here are alumni (proudest day of my life was getting admitted to Illinois, money just prohibited going there), but it’s honestly a problem that the SOLE big state school for a state of 12.5 million has a fan base mostly made of alumni … I think JW and co. are changing the narrative, but kids need to grow up with the default of being an Illini, not caring about where you go to college. We’d be so much better for it.
La Salle just hired Fran Dunphy, who's 73. He's now coached at a majority of Philadelphia's Big Five schools. There is an angle, though. Dunphy is a La Salle alum and the school needs to raise money fast to either build a new facility or revamp the current one. An alum had left them $5 million in his will nine years ago to build a new arena, but the gift would expire and they'd lose the money if it didn't happen in 10 years, so the pressure's on.Feels to me that if he wanted to, he would have by now. Need an arena built quick and on the cheap, Pennsylvania seems like a good place to do it.La Salle just hired Fran Dunphy, who's 73. He's now coached at a majority of Philadelphia's Big Five schools. Cleve State was good when I lived there, then their coach got busted with drugs and a hooker, IIRCWould expect Roger Powell to take a head coaching job in the next season or two... doesn't look like he wants to be on the Tommy Lloyd track and stay an assistant for forever until the perfect job pops up.
Reports: Gonzaga assistant Roger Powell Jr. was among Cleveland State candidates
Came here to post the same thing.Juwan mentioned for Lakers job, too
I hope he stays but you know, I can see it happen. On the other hand, if he likes to punch opponents after games, Michigan is the best place.Came here to post the same thing.

True, my main point is kids in IL should grow up Illini fans at a young age, regardless of where they eventually go to school! I know in Iowa City, it was brutal growing up as a non-Hawkeye fan because it was so baked into the culture. We need that in IL.Good post FotN. I would only take a small issue with the bolded. I became a fan after moving to the armpit of Illinois from Nashville after parents split, and being introduced to Illinois basketball around 1982/83 by my HS best friend and his dad. I took a scenic route to finally attending, eventually becoming an alumni...but I would venture there is a significant fan base similar to my HS friends family throughout downstate IL.....farm families, blue collar, and many like you, educated at our other state schools and JC/CC's.

I'd be happy to see him go. There's a lot not to like about Howard, but he's been successful. Juwon settling in for a long stay at Michigan is bad for us. I hope the Lakers offer him the moon.I hope he stays but you know, I can see it happen. On the other hand, if he likes to punch opponents after games, Michigan is the best place.
I suppose Amaker would be OK, but personally I'm hoping for another Brian EllerbeTommy Amaker preceded John Beilein. He was at Michigan for 6 years and never went to the NCAA.
I hope Juwan leaves for NBA and Michigan brings in another "Amaker" type.
Gotta figure it'd be Martelli's job if he wants it, no?I suppose Amaker would be OK, but personally I'm hoping for another Brian Ellerbe
I don’t know…LA and Hollywood seems to be slap-punch friendlyI hope he stays but you know, I can see it happen. On the other hand, if he likes to punch opponents after games, Michigan is the best place.
We should hope.Gotta figure it'd be Martelli's job if he wants it, no?
No way Underwood gets a look. Their fans could never see past his lack of Sweet 16sI don't like that. With OA already at Kentucky, I'd be worried about Underwood getting an offer. Nope nope nope.
