Where it “got us last year” was a conference championship. So are you suggesting that the two open scholarships remain so and just carry them over? Recruit 2 more 2022 HS recruits even though likely to be lesser quality since so late in the game? Take in two transfers but only if they’re not experienced — or if experienced just not as good as the guys we have now so the current guys play plenty? Those seem to be the three options to achieve no more experienced players. I like the fourth option of bringing in experienced, talented players who make the team better and deeper.
I can see coach holding onto a scholarship. He said it multiple times in interviews during the season. That scenario is what allowed us to get Dainja.

Yes I can. Griffin comes to mind. That's why he left. If you don't think that RJ and Griffin have more talent, size, length and ability than some of those he is referring to then you are blind. If you think you are right then just wait and see what RJ does. Give me a break. It's beyond obvious RJ brings talent and athleticism. That's not hating on DMW at all. It's pretty obvious. I'm not saying DMW should have played but Griffin and RJ both have had Illini fans wanting them playing more for good reason.
Simmer down, chief. I asked if there were any OTHER examples besides RJ.

Your example of Griffin is weak. And it actually proves my point. He was 7th on the team in minutes his sophomore year finishing ahead of senior Kipper Nichols and 3 mpg less than DMW. Who should Griffin have taken minutes from? Ayo? Kofi? Feliz? Trent? Giorgi?

I think characterizing BU as someone who habitually sits talented freshman in favor of less talented upperclassmen is wrong. It has happened once. Maybe.

Wouldn’t surprise me if held over 1 (though certainly not 2), though not sure that would be best for team unless you really can’t transfers you want and that fit. Have to remember that with TF and DMW on super senior seasons and not counting against scholarship limit, keeping one open still had team roster at +1 compared to normal season.

Any chance any of the 3 players that have entered the portal will withdraw from the portal and return like Kofi did last year? Anyone with knowledge want to throw out % chance that happens again? I mean i dont see it this year. I think Kofi was getting NIL feelers last year with it being new and all.

I guess I just struggle to believe that Podz was really that unplayable. Top 100 recruit but obviously I have no clue what's going on in practice. Outside of that, is 70 minutes over a season enough of a sample size to determine how good he is? I don't know, just trying to wrap my head around all of this.
I mean, we saw him in his few minutes. Poor defensive instincts (typical for a freshman, so not necessarily a knock, but it doesn't help), not quick/bursty enough to beat guys off the dribble, saw no evidence he could create his own shot against Big 10 defenders. Defensively, not enough strength to wall off on drives or hold his own in the post.

Im in the same boat but also realize how far we have come in 2-3 years! To have high caliber 4 star players not being able to crack the rotation is a GREAT problem to have.

Look in my time of following Illini recruiting, the more hoops that Illinois has to jump through, or the more things that have to happen to get a particular recruit is inversely correlated to the likelihood of landing said recruit.

Historically, I would agree with this 100%.

But tomorrow we’re getting an LOI signed by a 5 star PG who was committed to Kentucky a month ago. Kentucky! So, I maybe we’re living in a Brave New World where anything’s possible. 😜

I just wonder if Goode or RJ go through a rough patch next season or worse, don’t have the year we expect, if it will still be because DMW got more minutes than they did this season.
Games are fun but improvement is made during practice or in this case, the off-season.

Let the “Da’Monte killed RJ and Goode’s development” narrative die here or should we keep beating the same dead horse?

I believe Griffin’s minutes had diminished at the end of his Syracuse year. Also, the staff sees players every day in ways fans do not. Accepting that requires nuance, but it’s easier in living in a black and white world.
Griffin was extremely poor on defense. He shot well and rebounded ok, but both at Illinois and Syracuse he was criticized severely for his lack of effort on defense. Not sorry to see him go, and you know how it is with our coach. If you don't play D you don't play. That was mentioned earlier as to why Melendez wasn't playing more as well. Could have been Podz' problem as well.

More than a thousand players in the portal to choose from IIRC.
That is just mind blowing! I mean the free agency on Madden football doesnt even have that many players! That is nearly 77 full teams worth of players at 13 scholarships
