I thought we said no politics in the recruiting thread!

But, who remembers Levi, other than die-hard (and old) Illini fans? Debatable whether Eddie goes to UI or not (although I'd say Yates and Collins had more to do with recruiting Chicago than Levi). But, what's not debatable is Eddie was the big-name player that put UI back on the map. Remember his epic showdown with Magic which should have moved us to number one in the nation after we beat them? Unfortunately, the following Saturday OSU upset us. Eddie started us back to a household name.
And Mark Smith....RIP...

I think Audie started with Bartow and finished with Henson.

Yep. Interestingly, based on the attached DI article ("Bartow sure Matthews to sign"), during the Bartow era there apparently was no need for insiders, as you could just ask the coach for the latest recruiting update and his outlook. Article also provides recruiting update from one of the assistants at Purdue, another one of the finalists for Audie.

Sure was a different era, presumably before the rules that restrict what coaches can say about recruits before they sign were put in place.

My take, he's gone because he has always wanted to play in the league.
Unfortunately as understood by most, his game is circa 1987.

If he gets a two way contract in the G league, and the third center on the team takes an elbow in the nose at practice, he gets the call, sits on the end of the bench for a while and never plays a moment in an NBA game.

If he can get more NIL money this year he should take it as it will be the most he makes playing basketball in any given year going forward.

He is a legendary Illini, should have his jersey hoisted and seen as one of our greatest ever. He is a great college basketball player in my estimation, but it is what it is.

My big mistake if I posted this in the wrong thread.
