Where are you going to play him since Kofi is gone? Someone else had to get him his open looks. Illini are going to need people playing who can get their own shots, not stand still shooters.

This is young but I kinda like it. Man I really really like Rogers. He is going to be a stud of a playa.

He and Freeman-Liberty were the go to guys at Depaul, which forced him to take more 3's than he should be. IMO, he isn't a volume scorer like what Depaul needed him to be. Here, he could be more selective with his shooting and be the slasher he was meant to be.

But for a team to be good without 3pt shooting, they need to play lockdown defense, clean up the boards, and push in transition to get easy buckets. That is exactly what RJ, Jones, and Hawkins can do at the 2-4. Play suffocating defense with their length, each of them should be above average rebounders for their position, and they can all immediately push the ball and excel in transition.

If that's the case, then good 3pt shooting is the icing on top.
I haven't seen Jones play except the highlights that were on that tweet. How does he compare to someone like Agbaji at Kansas? Similar career trajectory?

I don’t know. I’m not sold, but this definitely is intriguing.

This is my guess without transfers. Primary transfer need is at the 5. Rodgers can handle the ball and he looks to be the best defensive player among the frosh. There will be a learning curve at the point but all of these players can handle the ball and drive. Defense can be much different with the size at the 2-5 all 6’6” or taller. May look more like 88-89 with a switching man to man.

Primary transfer need is both at the 5 and at guard. I doubt BU (or just about any coach) would play a FR who's played forward his whole life at the 2. If we didn't add anyone (which seems extremely unlikely), I think it's much more likely that Skyy and Epps would both start. But again, we will add at least one more guard.

Once I can add in my own subjectivity, I think next year's team will simply be more talented. I love the guys we are losing, but after watching this year's Tournament ... the way to win in March is by piling up on top 100 players year after year. We are FINALLY doing that.

That in a nutshell is a great way to feel about Illini ball right now.

We look at all our Beloved's players though two forms of vision...

With our HEARTS, we love all the guys who choose to be here and work to bring the Illini back to our rightful place in the upper reaches of college ball.

But with our HEADS we are honest enough to see the weak spots in these player's games and know that these things had to be addressed for the team for the future.

And two substantial washouts in the Tournament clearly exposed the Illini weak spots as a tournament team.

But now that 'It's Cool Again' to come to Illinois... the Peoria Pipeline just got a whole lot wider and now covers all of America (and the World) for top talent.

Success is contagious. And the Illini floor talent pool and the blood that runs in our veins just keeps getting Bluer and Bluer.

It will be interesting to see preseason rankings given we lost basically our entire starting line up of TF, AP, DMW, Jake, Kofi.
That said while we will certainly lack experience, talent wise would should be better at every position outside of Kofi. I'm not trying to bash our former players but I honestly feel that is the case. Kofi is a huge loss though for sure. However talent wise Skyy>TF, RJ>AP, TY>DMW, Coleman>Jake. Plus that's before any transfers. I think most will pick us around 7th or so but we could be next year's Wisconsin if the young men step up and we can still add some more experience and talent in the portal. Where do you expect us to be rated preseason vs the end of it?

WOW - Kofi, Curbelo, Frazier, Williams, Plummer, add (Podz, Payne, & maybe Grandison) - all gone - all 5 starters and 3 role players

IMO, It is hard to say we will be better next year. We will be different and exciting, but it's hard to really think we'll be B10 champs again (min. 6 other teams will be up there)
I believe we will. We were a team with flaws and good teams exposed them. We had two options in scoring. Kofi and the three pointer. We had no one who could drive and get to the line. Our fast break points dried up like a old grape on the vine. Dont get me wrong, I loved last years team and this plan would work in the regular season but in tourney time, Loyola and Houston took away options. Our lack of length killed us last year. Now we will be able to drop guys on the floor that have length, can create off the dribble and still shoot the three. The lane will now be open as Dain will be mobile which will allow Hawk, Skyy, Harris, Rogers and RJ room to create. We were one of the worst teams at creating fouls and with that, we missed FTs at a alarming rate. We probably lost 6-8 points a game just by missing and 1’s and 1-1s. We got the most out of every player last year. We played hard, won the conference regular a season and got a 4 seed. We were not even suppose to be in the top 4 last year. It was Michigan, OSU, MSU and Purdue being the top 4 teams. As much as I disliked not playing the FR, we overachieved and won. Brad did work magic. Now Brad will have ”his type players” next season. Long and athletic. We will be better.

I would agree if Grandy doesn't return....Grandy returns this may need to be adjusted a little at least at the start of the season

I'm truly going to miss Kofi. Love the guy and it was wonderful seeing his game grow and mature. I feel lucky to have gotten to watch him for three years wearing the orange and blue. Last year I thought there was maybe a 10% chance at best we'd see him not go pro, and when he entered the portal I was sure it was over, so to get an extra year with him was special. I don't think we'll see even 75% as dominant a center play for the Illini in my lifetime, if ever. Kid was amazing and I will surely miss him. I look forward to him returning to Assembly Hall for his B10 Championship ring and banner raising and wish him the absolute best of luck getting to the NBA. He has a long pro basketball career ahead of him, and I'm hoping some NBA team gives him a chance to play and he makes it impossible for them to take him off the court, similar to Ayo. But if not, he will make plenty of money overseas and be a fan favorite.

As for next year... We have some major gaps that will need to be filled, and it's going to take some time for all the new players to gel and play effectively. We will no longer have that unstoppable interior presence or the veteran leadership and defense of Trent, so I expect us to have some learning moments early in the season losing a few games that we wouldn't be expected to. I'm hoping we'll come together and be a much improved team in the 2nd half of the season, but we'll see how the players' personalities fit with each other. Obviously roster isn't set yet so still pieces to add, but as it stands now, while on paper we should have a tourney team, I think next year we're probably going to be a bubble team with chances to play ourselves in late. Maybe that's a little pessimistic, but considering all the new players, I think that's all we should expect from a team as young as we'll have. That said, if we show real improvement and start coming together by end of season, I think the following year we will have a chance of making the deep run we haven't seen since 2005. And who knows, maybe this team will exceed my expectations next year, but until the season starts, I'm just going to enjoy the pleasure I've had watching Ayo, Kofi, and Trent these past 4 years.
Two wings from day one--Goode and Melendez have to start. The 4 freshmen will get increased playing time as the season progresses. Clark has to start at the point from day one.

We've lost 90% of our scoring, rebounding, steals, etc.. We will not be ranked nor picked high in Big10. But I like our team and their potential!

Yep, I got to see last year's team twice: vs. #11 Arizona and at Northwestern. I thought the closest we had come to "jelling" was during that Arizona game and the subsequent beatdown of Missouri to take out our frustrations. We then had to deal with even MORE distractions and roadblocks, and I think by the time I thought we were really hitting our stride again (at Indiana), (1) the adversity wasn't quite done, with more injuries to come, and (2) we looked exhausted down the stretch. This team never fully put it together, and we still one our first Big Ten title in 17 years and got a top 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I expect next year's team to follow a much more "linear" trajectory. We might get some top 25 votes depending on who we add in the portal, and we might fall out of it early due to some clunky losses. However, I expect Skyy to be a darling of Illini Nation by February, and I expect Hawkins and Melendez to be studs. We are flying under the radar for the first time since 2019-20, and that still means likely top 5 in the Big Ten? I love that.
Wonderful analysis Fighter, thanks. 100% agree. While the top goal is always winning the NCAA Tournament, it has not happened in my lifetime. I was in school for the 89 team and in St. Louis for the 05 team. Crushing. But I LOVE winning the Big Ten regular season, and this is a much more attainable goal. The fact that this group, with all the injuries and setbacks, achieved that is a remarkable feat. I will always remember this team very fondly.

We were ranked 4th by bleacherreport with or without Kofi after Belo transferred and Clark came in.
