Michigan needs to worry more about whether or not Juwan is even going to be there next year ... And less about who gets admitted and who doesn't ...
They think he is going to leave and afraid he won’t?

I just think the “wait for the NBA draft fallbacks” crowd needs to be aware that was the same conversation that was happening last year too. We ended up getting Payne and Plummer. Neither were NBA prospects. If we wanna shoot our shot again then that is fine. But I’d rather have sure things (guys currently in the portal) on the roster given the youth. And there really isn’t a point in planning for development anymore given the portal. Also we haven’t landed an elite level transfer yet. Just seems foolish to bank on doing that.

So like, who DO we have a shot at? Seems like all the early interest guys are dropping off every day.

Until it's January and you want to be...But really, it all depends on what Skyy and Epps are capable of doing at this level and how quickly. The reason to have a vet guard is b/c of the certainty, but the ceiling is also usually lower (given that we've missed on a guy like Brandon Murray...now, if there's another option that becomes available on that level, then this won't apply). Take Kentucky for example: they probably would've been better off playing TyTy at point rather than giving 31 mpg to Sahvir Wheeler, who needed the ball in his hands to be effective (non-shooter) and whose offensive/defensive ratings aren't nearly those of TyTy. They might've taken a few more lumps throughout the season, but probably would've ended up better for it come Feb and March. Now, your highly-touted PG might end up being Devin Askew instead of TyTy, which is the risk and is the reason Cal went out and got a guy like Wheeler after the 20-21 fiasco. Given that we have two seemingly-capable young PG/CG talents coming in as frosh, the odds are pretty good that at least one can be effective next year, if not really good. If both happen to hit, then we're golden. I don't want one, or both, of them to have caps on their potential playing time because we brought in a vet that's good but not as good, and also has certain PT expectations. I think we need to be really picky about who that guard may be and not bring in a vet with warts or limitations just to bring in a guy that's played a bit at this level. It's also needs to be somebody that is a fit on or off the ball and is OK with playing 35 mpg or 20 mpg depending on what's in the team's best interest.
Has Dre Feliz got a younger brother, cousin, step brother?

There's nothing wrong with the bolded, I'm just surprised you were donating to basketball in the first place based on your thought process. I consider athletics to be valuable, but never considered big time sports as essential for an academic institution, nor athletics as one of the more impactful areas to donate to "for the university as a whole." Kinda sounds like this decision could have been made for the same reasons 20 years ago.
Amen to this. I am a late 80’s grad from UI and can’t thank the institution enough for keeping up a reputation that led to a PhD and continued relevance in my career! That is what I seek to protect.

That said, I love having a great basketball team because it is a great escape from the riggers of my career. I hate seeing kids faced with the same for basketball but now love that NIL is in play to make it worth it. I’ll be donating to that since it goes directly to the kids, minus a haircut.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get anyone from the LSU grab bag sweepstakes just not surprised... Wait I'm an illini fan. That seems right

Not according to Dishwhite, who was run off the board for “being negative,” or @IllinoisReg. Both told us this in late March.
I think you're mischaracterizing the reason for the response to both of those posters. Sure, it was negative, and nobody likes negative. Not going to act like that didn't play a part here. But both were either a) almost nonexistent on this board (Dishwhite, 10 total posts before leaving) or b) had just (literally) joined the board a few days prior. I don't think I've ever seen a person join this board, immediately claim to have inside information (either positive or negative), and not be met with deep initial skepticism. This is an internet forum after all -- nobody has any idea if the new poster is a troll or somebody with true inside info. It's trial by fire and always has been (see ole LincolnIlliniFan, ProfessorQC, etc., etc.). I'm not saying it should be that way, just that it's always been that way for new people posting "inside information" contrary to expectations, whether that is positive or negative.

Kinda the same but not really. Last year we had TF, DMW, Hutch, Jake, Belo and other guys. Also last year Kofi didn't say what he was doing until late so we missed on some guys. . This year there are a lot more minutes and opportunity with all of the departures. It should be a much easier sell.

ProfessorQC got a wildly positive response because he only posted positive prognostications.

Thank you for a sincere reply. Clearly, Illinois fans here are easily triggered. First, I also bleed orange and blue and will always be a fan dreaming of that title.
Also a late 80’s alumni, I have been fortunate to be able to donate to specific facility projects (Most recently for Ubben), as well as towards general athletic funds over the years. However, as you and many others have said before, the entire landscape of college athletics has evolved into something unrecognizable from our day. The entire point of me posting in the first place was to acknowledge that I have been ethically torn and to seek feedback from other donors— so thanks again. Fundamentally, I just became too conflicted. Seriously, what is the point of a public university??? It just seems to be way out of balance now. Between the network revenues and NIL, I also started to feel like I was being duped. I will still support U of I but will be shifting my donations towards areas I now consider more impactful for the university as a whole, like research and scholarships, not just men’s bball. Who knows, maybe it’s just me getting old.
That may be, and I think it's an important conversation to have. But consider that even back to the 80s, the schools and NCAA were making a lot of money off of things like March Madness and the players could legally see zero of that despite being the talent that makes that revenue possible. Now, with NIL, the players can see some of that money. They still can't directly receive any of the TV or ticket revenue, though, so the only way they get some of the money they generate is through donors like you. If and until direct payments to players from schools are allowed, the only way players get a piece of the pie they help make is if donors provide it through NIL contracts.

I'd argue, therefore, that, if anything, you were getting more duped before NIL was allowed. Now you have more say in whether your dollars go to the program directly or to the players within the program (which supports the program indirectly).

I should also add that I think donations to other aspects of the university are also very useful and worth considering. I am obviously an athletics fan (or else why am I here), but my day job is a faculty member elsewhere and will certainly stand up for the idea that donations to academic programs can be very impactful. Scholarships, fellowships, buildings, cool new equipment, and named chairs for retaining excellent faculty are all great ways to support academics.
