If we got Nance, I actually don’t think we’d have one, clear starting lineup like past years; we’ll have 3-4 guys almost always start and adjust to whom we are playing. As good as we have been the past few years, we have been pretty inflexible … and that’s been especially evident in both NCAAT losses when other teams had us scouted well and took advantage of some of our weaknesses. I think that’s what excites people so much about next year!

I’ll give you the Loyola loss in 2021. But the only thing evident in our loss to Houston was that we were decimated by injuries. Had nothing to do with being inflexible.

I didn’t mean to simplify it, but … did you not see all of the turnovers from double and triple teaming Kofi? If we couldn’t feed him, we looked lost for crucial minutes before we adjusted.

And the game two days before. Other than RJ, the team stood around and waited to pop a 3. Was hopeful Belo would've gotten us started, but he did not play well in the first half. Definitely looking forward to a more dynamic team next year. Don't get me wrong- I'll miss Kofi and everything about him. He was a stud. I wish we would've had the options coming in this past season. Oh well.

Yeah, we just looked so lost in the Tourney when Plan A wasn’t working. We would always eventually adjust, as good teams do, but when you have a player like Kofi or Ayo … it can be a slow adjustment, as we relied on them so much. I watched the Houston game with a Hawkeye friend and I was so down and frustrated the whole game, and he kept being like … dude, you’re only down 6! If we had a better ability to adjust to our offense being thrown off, that’s a totally different game.

Nah. RJ needs to start IMHO. ColeHawk can be 6th man and still get a good chunk of minutes. Pretty sure Rodgers will get major tick, as well. I think he's the unsung hero of the frosh class (and that's with a stud like Clark doing his thing).
Totally agree. RJ might have been starting by the end of last season if he had not been sidetracked by the appendiciits. I am by no means a talent evaluator but he looks to me like he could be headed for the stardom.

I agree I think RJ maybe the best player on the team. He sure looked good coming on the end of last year. I still see a little Johnny Davis type of leap for him. We may have too much talent for him to score as much as Davis, but he could have that type of leap from season to season.

Eh. They were pretty inflexible. Very reliant on Kofi and outside shooting. That's why Curbelo could have been a game changer. They missed Ayo's mid range game even if it statistically is not a great shot to take.

The original post expressed concern over our point guard depth. My response was basically that we will have a number of guys who can handle the ball. Overall the 2023 Illini could be a very good ball handling team. We are not looking at 1979 or 1999 all over again. I did not intend for it to turn into who is better, past players or incoming recruits.
1979 16-0 #1 in country when Steve Lanter blew his knee out - never played basketball again. Team collapsed and finished 19-11.

Andre has Allan Iverson / Nate Archibald /Stefan Curry/ John Stockton type ability to jitterbug and drive the lane. He was able to convert the drives into points his freshman year but due to injury/Covid and Ayo going to NBA unable to convert his sophomore year. Great potential but has to be able to hit at least the mid range jumper to play in NBA. There was no year to year improvement. Hopefully he does improve at St. Johns and eventually makes NBA. He also has to become more a team player. Too ball dominant. Also gambles on steals too much on defense.

I would say it is a long shot but then again I never expected Fred Van Fleet 6'1" @ 14 ppg sr year at Wichita State to go from being undrafted become an NBA all star. Fred was a 43% college shooter but shot 39%from three.
Good post regarding no ayo and his adjustments. Good rebounder, great at the spectacular pass but very average on the regular pass. Way too ball dominant and then didn’t get others involved. It was time to move on for him and this thread

Love belo and wish him the best and hope to see him in the nba (don’t like his chances) but think our current PG’s will get many ohh and Ahh’s and positive team results
