1979 16-0 #1 in country when Steve Lanter blew his knee out - never played basketball again. Team collapsed and finished 19-11.View attachment 18395
The game before that Eddie Johnson hit a baseline jumper with just a few seconds left to beat #1 Michigan State with Magic Johnson. MSU went on to win the Natty that year. Illini lost to OSU the next game and never recovered.

Eh. They were pretty inflexible. Very reliant on Kofi and outside shooting. That's why Curbelo could have been a game changer. They missed Ayo's mid range game even if it statistically is not a great shot to take.
But the injuries caused us to be one-dimensional, not inflexibility. W/o Curbelo, we had virtually no one who could penetrate and create for others. And he was no where near 100% virtually the entire season. RJ was starting to look good towards the end of the year, but his Covid, ankle injury and Appendicitus held back his progress. In addition, Grandison, one of our best shooters and passers, was very limited by his shoulder against Houston. Trent was obviously hurting much of the year, but especially in the Tournament.

When you're dealing with those problems, there's not much you can do but try to feed Kofi and hope your outside shots fall at a high rate.

W/o the injuries, last year's team looked very promising as of Nov 2021. I hope the year was a 100-year storm in that regard. But it's one reason you always try to add more quality depth.

I said Illinois was out when we got Mayer. A lot of that was on timme leaving and other schools offering more/not thinking they’d have to offer as much. I’d say Illinois is back in the drivers seat

So with JJ Taylor dropping out of the top 30, seems more realistic he will end up going to college. Are we still actively pursuing him?

Can "students" at Donda Academy even qualify academically?
Zion Cruz should give us a clear picture.

You could say the same about oak hill academy and others, they just have the track record. I don’t see any reason to expect they aren’t until someone is declared ineligible

I don’t get into the confidence level and all that, but …

My Illinois people, and people I know within CBB are confident he’s coming … That makes me pretty confident
I believe you, I'm just wondering why others aren't saying anything about Nance right now. Is this a pretty quiet recruitment?
