I'd like to get Bates. I think Underwood is the guy who could help him get his head on straight and reach his potential on the court. I think Fletcher could work effectively with him to add strength and muscle, particularly if Bates can prove he has the necessary discipline. Finally, after this coming season, we will lose at least two starters (the transfers) and who knows who else now that the transfer portal has changed the landscape. Just my opinion.

Underwood doesn’t strike me as a guy who walks around with a kick me sign on his back.

Not sure Illini fans would have a great reaction if we were pulling the class Iowa appears to be

We are going to lose players every year to the transfer portal. This upcoming season isn’t special in that regard. We just proved we can reload and will do it again. Bates has too many off the court issues and isn’t worth the risk.

You think Sky’s gonna still be on campus when Fears gets on the court?

I do indeed. Everyone in the top 50-75 is a one and done before their freshman season starts. But then reality sets in for most. 25 years freshman declared for this years draft. About 3/4 of those are sure fire draft picks and made the right decision and the other 1/4 either got bad advice from people around them who don't have their bests interests at heart or they didn't want to be in college in the first place. I do not believe that Skyy fits either of these camps.

*I will also not being qualifying this with a "Gee I hope he proves me wrong and he plays himself into lottery." like most posters when they express an honest opinion that isn't the absolute best case projection for one of our own.

His dad and Derrick Grimm (Missouri) played on my high school team (Morton High outside Peoria). They were a 3 and 4 years behind me. Both played in the NBA briefly. Since his dad went to Iowa, not a big surprise he followed. He is not good enough to play with the level of recruit Underwood is getting now
Technically speaking, Trent Frazier wouldn’t be good enough to play with the level of recruit Underwood is getting now… but you know Coach would sure love another year of him. And if Keegan Murray wanted to transfer to Illinois instead of going to the NBA, we’d all be jumping for joy.

He is making more with Ignite than any school offered him ...
Makes sense. I was under the impression most Ignite salaries were at the $125k range which seems less than what a lot of top guys have been getting, though I know Ignite has gone as high as $500k in the past. Still surprised UNC or Kentucky couldn't/wouldn't beat that.

Ignite also comes with significant risk. You can't go back for a 2nd year if your game needs work. It's draft or nothing, and they've had some top guys fall out of 1st round or go undrafted.

Being able to train full-time can be an attractive development track. Not to mention that not having to go to school is also very attractive to some.
I really don't think draft outcomes have shown Ignite to be a better development option than college, and it basically takes away the option to take feedback and come back a 2nd year before the draft to develop. If Ayo, for example, had had the G League option and taken it he likely goes undrafted after his one year there and who knows if he ever makes the NBA.

I gotta say, "Fight for Iowa" is a really dumb slogan. Really skimping on the creative budget over there.
