I always felt that Marcus was a disappointment in an Illini uniform. He never measured up to the top 5 or 6 of the Flyin Illini. He never seemed more than a role player.

yeah, never heard anything about Senior being a walk-on at Illinois, he was a big time recruit to Purdue when they were a hot destination for QB recruits, I'd imagine he was a scholarship transfer to Illinois unless there was something funky going on his Transfer.. His son just wasn't very good and the only way he would have been able to play at a P5 program was as a walk-on.

For some reason, I like these rankings better than others.
Back in the day when Jeff George played, if you were on scholarship with a Big 10 school in a sport (Purdue), you could not get a scholarship after that from another Big 10 school in that same sport. Hence, Jeff George (the first) had to foot the bill for attending Illinois. Maybe...something under the table???? ( I was there during the slush fund scandal in 1967)
Ah gotcha, so yeah I guess more like technicality. I'm sure he was getting something under the table, unless he came from a family with enough money that they just didn't care.
No, he had to pay his own way to Illinois. Wanted to work under White who then left for Mackovic. Under the rules at the time, no one could transfer in confernce and get an athletic scholarship at their new school.
I think it is very unlikely that players are going to pay their own way in the future for the chance to play for a particular team or coach. I'll be shocked if it doesn't happen at some point under odd circumstances.

In theory you could. But, that argument falls apart when you realize that no athlete worth his salt would want to be the “14th man” on a stacked team. If he’s actually the 1st man, then whoever is the 14th man won’t stick around, thus opening up a scholarship. There’s only so many minutes available.
But more importantly, if school A offers a million dollars and you have to pay your own way while schools B through Z offer a million plus the full ride, School A has put itself in an unnecessary recruiting disadvantage.
I'm not sure your point here. Your status as a walk on or not is not going to affect whether you get drafted.
As a freshman it was very difficult to break into the lineup of the Flying Illini
Marcus was significantly better his sophomore year when he and Kendall carried the team - 21-10 #5 seed lost to Dayton round one
he was drafted mid 2nd round and played 4 years in NBA averaging between 7-10 ppg
Nice all around skills but not super athletic.
It was weak HS class - probably best NBA career was Larery Johnson then Dennis Scott

Agree.. football is more likely to have a "numbers crunch" for scholarships (the big programs typically use the time right before summer to "strongly encourage" some backups to go find new places to look to clear the last 5-10 scholarships to get under the limit) just because you have so many different positional groups and Freshmen aren't often expected to crack the 2-deep. Pretty rare for a basketball player to stick around very long if they are outside the top 10 players for very long because there just isn't playing time to go around and younger players routinely pass up older ones.

Ahhh yes, the late-80s, an identical time period to the current
Depending on this summer's AAU circuit, Brown could really blow up and then the big fish would come swimming around and make him hard to get, at his current ranking though Illinois should have a really good shot.

yeah, we may be at a good enough spot to potentially get him even if he does shoot up a few big spots, but it's always tough when the "blue bloods" come poking around

Well, Jeff George did it without any NIL money. So it won't be surprising to find someone do it now with NIL money.
As I've noted, it's likely to be rare. But it's also apt to happen at some point.

Umm…Illinois is a big fish.
As I recall, his family was well off financially, and tuition was a lot less in those days.
Me, too and it limited his quickness moving laterally, IIRC. He was still able to become very good on defense by his final year by always knowing exactly where he needed to be on the floor.
