I always felt that Marcus was a disappointment in an Illini uniform. He never measured up to the top 5 or 6 of the Flyin Illini. He never seemed more than a role player.
he disappointed, but I don't think I'd go so far as role player.

If there was 2nd team all big ten back then, Liberty would have hit it.

As far as Illinois/big fish/Brown, of course I think we're heading in the right direction, as it is, Richmond/Ayo/Skyy level has been our "glass ceiling" of the last 20 years (post-Self) or so as far recruiting rank that we are able to get pulled into Illinois, so if Brown gets above that level we'd be "breaking new ground" so to speak to get him on board. It's not to say that it can't/won't happen, just that it always starts to get a bit more difficult with the players that enter the field when players get above that level with their ranking.

In theory you could. But, that argument falls apart when you realize that no athlete worth his salt would want to be the “14th man” on a stacked team. If he’s actually the 1st man, then whoever is the 14th man won’t stick around, thus opening up a scholarship. There’s only so many minutes available.

But more importantly, if school A offers a million dollars and you have to pay your own way while schools B through Z offer a million plus the full ride, School A has put itself in an unnecessary recruiting disadvantage.
If it's June and Underwood has 13 scholarship players and a 5 Star UNEXPECTEDLY decides to graduate a year early and wants to play at Illinois, something has to give. With NIL, Underwood can tell the player that he will be a preferred walk on and that someone will be calling to discuss financial arrangements to play at Illinois. A member of the Guardians will call and they can discuss the amount of NIL that said player will receive and he can pay his own tuition. What he will receive will be no one's business except his and the Guardian organization. Whether he is on scholarship or not will not have any impact on his playing time, that's for Underwood to decide. And he won't be considered the "14th player" just because he isn't on scholarship. For a 5 Star player, scholarship doesn't mean squat, they don't plan on staying more than a year anyway. With the changes brought about by the portal, I imagine most head coaches of teams in the major conferences are going to keep one scholarship in their back pocket so this scenario isn't likely, but NIL could solve the issue of not having an available scholarship for a coveted player.

The big dust up at NW a few years back was because there wasn't a way to balance all of the team player benefits with pay. There are evidently NCAA rules about who can eat at the team meals, etc.. (IANAL)

History: Collins was trying to move a 'non-performing' (bench) player to an academic scholarship to free up the basketball scholarship. The athlete fought it because they wanted the benefits that were exclusive to athletic scholarships. They were promised 4 years so long as they did their work, and 'they were doing their promised work' -- fully partaking in practices, etc..

Sergio physically dominated in HS but once he got to college did not have size, athleticism or shooting ability to take it to next level. Had the heart of a lion.

I always thought he had ideal skill set to play defense end for the Illini

As a freshman it was very difficult to break into the lineup of the Flying Illini
Marcus was significantly better his sophomore year when he and Kendall carried the team - 21-10 #5 seed lost to Dayton round one
he was drafted mid 2nd round and played 4 years in NBA averaging between 7-10 ppg
Nice all around skills but not super athletic.
It was weak HS class - probably best NBA career was Larery Johnson then Dennis Scott
Marcus was nicknamed "Doc" because his athletic talent reminded other players of "the Doctor" Julius Erving.

That second year was actually his junior year due to stupid NCAA rules.

Expectations. He only played two years at Illinois. He was behind Anderson and Battle, two all time greats, his first year. His second year he averaged 18 and 7. He shot 51% from the field, 38% from three, 76% from the line.

He was second in scoring that year to Kendall Gill who led the Big Ten in scoring.

Most heralded recruit at Illinois since Efrem Winters. That class included Bruce Douglas, Doug Altenberger, Anthony Welch were B10 champs went to the elite eight losing at Lexington to Sam Bowie and Kentucky.

Marcus only played for 2 years at Illinois. The Flying Illini would have gone to Final Four without him.

I thought Anthony Welch was in the same class as George Montgomery and Jay Daniels.

Really like him. At the very worst, he's a Plan B guy. But I think he's a Plan A. Gonna be hard to beat out OSU and OU (home state schools). Do we have a legit chance, insiders?

Welch was injured and had a medical redshirt, so he graduated with Winters et al.

Ken Colliers- Norman was originally part of the 1982 class. He was headed to Wisconsin but signed with us when their coach left.

I don't know about football, but his defense on the court was superb. He was always an outstanding rebounder for his height. Inch for inch, one of the nation's best.

Joel Goodson

respect my decision™
He's ranked in the 80's why wouldn’t we....#notaninsider

Just because a kid isn't that highly ranked, doesn't negate the possibility that he's a heavy lean.

BTW, Pierce is yet another seriously underrated player.
