I don't think Hawkins will be a major contributor this season. Hope I'm wrong, though. What we need to keep in mind is patience, esp. in the early going; these guys haven't played together before. They need time to gel (esp. with a freshman PG).

He's literally our highest ranked player on NBA mock drafts for next year. Lol...so if that is in fact what happens...we will be a middle of the pack B1G squad.

first, anyone picked in the second round is just really pointless. So I just consider those projections to have no value.

Second, there are lots of players on this team that can have breakout seasons that push CoHawk into a supporting role. Do I think that will happen? No.

People's projections on Hawkins are based on a few really great games mixed with a bunch of mediocrity. He's scored in double figures in two big ten games. He's had double figure rebounds in one big ten game.

I'm expecting him to have a good season but not one that will cry out for the first round. Hope he's a superstar. I'm just not seeing that.

Lol....ok. You understand that a 2nd round pick get's a guaranteed contract...right? So....it literally has value and is not pointless. Oh and Ayo says hello.

Besides that...he's still our highest ranked NBA prospect...regardless if he's a 1st, 2nd, or UFA.......and no one is saying he'll be a 1st round pick or a "superstar".
He's clearly an NBA talent with a very high upside.

If he is one of the best players on your team, and doesn't perform to his very clear expectations by people other than Illini (NBA scouts).....you are not going to be as good a team.

Those projections are based on more than "a really few great games mixed with a bunch of mediocrity". They are professional scouts. It's literally their job...and they have nothing to do with Illinois.

Saying your 6'10 Jr. with NBA projections isn't going to be a major contributor this year means.....this team won't be as good as if he is a major contributor.

I'm not arguing whether he will or won't have a good season or be a whatever round pick....just what it means for this team.

I'm saying a projection of a second round pick a year in advance is pointless.

He's not "clearly an NBA talent". He's clearly got NBA potential.

We don't yet know who the "best players are on our team". We know about Mayer and Shannon. The rest is mostly guesswork at this point.

The guys who do mock drafts are not "professional scouts" They are sportswriters. They have to fill in 60 spots for a draft a year ahead of time.

We have lots of players who can pick up the slack if he doesn't meet expectations.

The argument isn't about this....it's about one of the best players on your team.....arguably the best NBA prospect....not being a major contributor.

Seriously?

Frankly it's all "guesswork" right? We don't know any more about Mayer and Shannon than we do CoHawk.
And honestly my point isn't even just about CoHawk.
Pick any of the top 7 or 8 rotation......say any one of them isn't going to be a major contributor....your team is worse off.

Ok...the scouts aren't actually writing the mock drafts. Fine. Who do you think those sportswriters talk to? The players mom's? They aren't spending that much time watching all of CoHawk's...or the other 60 players' minutes. Sure it's their opinion...but what info do you think they use to formulate these mock drafts or NBA prospect lists? I'll answer that for you....it's professional scouts and coaches.

We have lots of players who can pick up the slack if he doesn't meet expectations.

Oh goodie!! (pun intended) After that top 8....what 6'10" skill forward with NBA "potential"...not "talent"....smh.......are you replacing that contribution with?
I'll go ahead and answer that for you too.....................no one.

Nope. While the vast majority of second round picks do end up with guaranteed contracts, there is no rule that makes it so. They are essentially restricted to negotiate with the team that owns their draft rights. If that team has no cap space, roster space, and has used both of their 2 way exceptions, you could be out of luck and have to accept a G league assignment (pays about $35k) That’s part of the reason you see 2nd round picks thrown into trades seemingly indiscriminately. Some teams literally can’t sign them.

I thought the first two years are guaranteed for the first and second rounds.....just the first....my mistake.

LOL.

You really think we know more about Hawkins than Mayer? More years, more starts, more minutes, actual invites to NBA tryouts?

And the sportswriters talk to some scouts, but mostly they are looking at stats and rankings. That's why these draft ratings are so crazy wrong a year ahead of time.

Of course we'll be worse if CoHawk doesn't play like a first rounder. But that wasn't what you started with. You said we'd be middle of the pack and I absolutely don't believe that it's a certainty. Plenty of guys that can take this team to a top three finish in conference if CoHawk doesn't perform as expected. Hopefully we'll never find out.

Yes...we...Illinois fans.... know as much about CoHawk as Mayer. I didn't say "we know more". Despite all of this...he's still ranked as our highest NBA prospect.

Ahhhh there we are...finally. My simple reply to the original poster........was that we would be a middle of the pack B1G team. Depending on who you read we are projected 1-3 currently. If we were middle of the pack.....say 4-8....that is in fact....worse.

IMO, we will not be a top 3 B1G team if CoHawk....or any other of our top 8 players....is not a major contributor.

But it was fun going through all those other points!

I still think that we can be a top 3 if not the best B1G team even if one of our top 8 guys (With the exception of Clark) is not a major contributor.
Now two or more guys not contributing, then we're in trouble.
But we have enough talented guys that they can pick up the slack.
