as much as I want new unis, Im okay with them getting the color right this year and doing the big change next year.
at least our helmets look way better than 3 years ago when the I was slanted forward on mistake

and for me? ditch the greys
and would like to see blue pants or jerseys sometime
Ditch the greys, keep the blue jerseys, ditch the blue pants.

Blue pants are great on the road, especially when playing a team that has a similar pant color to orange like Iowa.

Dark pants make the players look smaller, IMO. And I really don't think the color of the uniforms the Illini wear should be determined by the color of the opposing team's uniforms.

So this pains my #TeamShield heart, but the Nike rebrand can now officially be declared a failure in every way, right? I know we can zero in on some positive developments (cleaned-up Block I, the aforementioned Shield), but the goal was to stop each individual sport from doing its own separate thing, which in turn was separate from what the University as an institution was doing and now we're.....right back to doing that, in perhaps even more pronounced ways (basketball and football have maybe less in common than ever before when it comes to how they look).

I will give all of us armchair designers a bit of credit that we saw the fatal flaw - the font - from the outset, we just perhaps didn't see how quickly it would cause things to unravel. It can't be stressed enough that when we don't have much else in terms of a visual identity, the font HAS to be something that people want not just to use, but use in a lot of different ways.

In some ways I feel like the goal of brand uniformity itself was a trendy 2014-era fad.

Like, Michigan State was always held up as a great exemplar of that, and their basketball team wears a rotating cast of throwbacks all the time now just like we do.

You are 1000% correct. I had a long rambling post about how brand uniformity did not always work. Alas, here we are.

I feel like if they can just keep a few elements consistent, i.e. colors, logo, then the rest is just minutia. I don't care if there are other consistent themes across different sports as long as a) they are recognizable as Illinois teams, and b) they look good.

Generally, I agree, but we needed it more than others. MSU can get away with that because they have Sparty, the Block S, the Spartan logo, the stylized arched "State" - a bunch of great, unique marks that you can pull from as needed.

If you were creating something right now and needed to add one element to unmistakably identify it as being affiliated with the University of Illinois, what would it be? I think probably you'd have no option but to go with the Block I, right?

Yep. Block I is the only uniquely "us" thing that most people would be able to identify. Could have said the chief logo back in the day but that isn't happening. I wish we hadn't abandoned the shield so soon because that would have been another. Alas...

It’s funny that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. I like the traditional O B O at home, love white pants and the greys on occasion. On the road prefer O W O but occasional all white (the most retro look) or blue pants. I hate all orange all the time. There.

You must be new here, that's not how things work on this message board. Your opinion on a subject, particularly if you feel VERY STRONGLY about it, is absolutely correct! ;)
