Well we did lose 4 starters (4.5 if you count Andre) and an consensus 2 time first time All American in Kofi.

Preseason rankings mean nothing. JMO Successful season - another B10 championships and this time minimum make it to elite 8.

Big challenge with 3 new to Illinois starters - Skyy, Mathew and Terrance. However Mathew and Terrance are senior starters with NCAA tourney experience so that makes a difference.

Can't wait for Illini football then basketball. Football team was only couple plays away from being 7-5.

Rothstein is a 🤡. I think his starting lineup projections are coming in at a less than 50% hit rate. Purdue at 19 😂 ! That is one of the funniest thing I’ve read in a while. That is a fringe tournament team.

Guy knows what he’s doing though-our maniacal fanbase has certainly let him hear about it. Clicks/engagement is the name of the game. That being said, he should legitimately retire if in any universe he thinks this is the #37 team in the country.

I like it. Motivation for our team to work hard getting ready for the season and to be focused when it comes time to hit the court. Please keep the preseason disrespect rolling in.
Hell yeah…

We outta be used to it though…more often than not. We’re basically Rodney Dangerfield nationally.
I’m with you though. Let ‘em disrespect/underestimate us…all good fodder.

You know, pre-season ratings are next to worthless! Where was MichiGONE last year? One? Three? They fell completely out by the end of November! We have TONS of talent but all the so-called experts look at is what we lost, which was just about everyone who played significant minutes.

We have 10 great potential players who all need to step up for us to win. And I think they will! With a rough early schedule there may be a slip up or two but we will come out fire-tested and annealed for the Big 10 schedule.

Slight roller-coaster at the beginning, then screaming downhill after that! Just avoid last year's injuries/illness and we will be iron fist HARD by tournament time. We have TNT at every position!

Ill-ini!

Although this game is a fairly easy trip for me, even at my age... I promise NOT to attend, as 3 of the 4 previous trips to basketball games on or near the west coast have resulted in losses... You can't imagine how this breaks my heart not to be able to show my grandchildren my guys in the O & B on the hardwood...

Preseason ratings do have an effect on ratings. Those rated high start high in the ratings even with mediocre wins and losses result in small drops especially to other initially high ranked teams. Those rated low do not move up until showing significant wins. Any losses to high ranked teams take significant additional wins to finally move up.

While this is technically true, a school in a P5 conference like Illinois will have more than enough time and opportunity to move up to the top or near the top of the rankings before the season is done. The only real effect is if a team is losing games. If you start out at say #5, and you lose some games early, you might manage to stay in the rankings — where if you start at say #37, after some early loses you’re gonna have to work hard to get in the rankings. Again, still plenty of time to do when you’’re in the BIG considering who you play. Plus, if your argument is a team should be ranked much higher in preseason and you’re right, they shouldn’t be losing games right?

Also, so many people now cite and place such importance on KenPom and Torvik rankings. Do those rankings even consider AP poll rankings in their calculations?
