Here's another maybe: maybe Coleman Hawkins focuses on scoring inside and mid-range, kind of like a 'conventional' center. Yes, he's not a conventional center and wants to display his 3 ball for the NBA.. Think back on what an effective scorer Ken Norman was and how he went about his business as an inside guy. I'm no saying Coleman shouldn't take 3's; just that an emphass on mid-range can be good thing. We probably expect Brad to run an NBA 3 ball oriented offense but look at Bulls DeRozen. He can hit the 3 but makes his living in the mid-range. I just want to see our best team and, without referring only to Hawkins, I hope we don't live and die by the 3.

I don’t mind the comparison, but one important difference is the way the game has changed since Ken Norman was here - it’s much more of an outside-in game now than then. I don’t have the stats but I’d bet there are substantially more 3’s taken now than in the late 80’s …a lot more.

Just took 3 Illini seasons for comparison 3pt made vs attempted:
1988-89. 136/320. 42%
2004-05. 344/877. 39%
2021-22. 285/821. 36%
By looking at the roster it is looking more like the 88-89 team physically than either 2004-05 or 21-22. so believe the stats will be much less than last year but still more than 88-89. The mid range game is going to be important as the defenses are targeting the 3 pt. and shots at the basket. Believe this is particularly true of bigs. In his last season Hill took 183 of his 435 shots from three. Black took 43 of 344. The three is an important weapon but risky as the prime weapon imho.

Plummer was 98-240 from 3 last year (40.8 percent). so that means we were 187 - 581 from 3 W/O AP. That equates to a 32 percent for the team sans AP. That's hoisting up almost 18 3s a game that Plummer DIDN'T shoot. .yeah, yeah, Kofi dictated some of that but almost 43 percent of our attempted offense was the 3ball. Translation - too many missed 3s and not enough attacking the basket. Prediction, we see a lot more shots driving to the basket this year!

Lots of talent, much of it young. Depth of talent, for sure. Who’s the All American, though? Two seasons ago we had two of those.
I definitely hear ya. I really feel like TSJ and Mayer can be that type of player(s) this year. Not saying they will be All Americans but they are proven players at a high level IL has rarely been at. That, and given my expectations for RJ and the highest rated, deepest frosh class we have maybe ever had puts me in the must win now camp. We should know quite a bit by early December given our early season opportunities for big wins.
