He's a 2024. How is it too late?
Not necessarily too late but definitely later than some of the competitors, which includes blue bloods and some very strong schools. We shall see.

I don’t think we offer and enter these recruitments unless there are indications that the prospect is interested in our program.

Would it be better to have a longer relationship? Probably. Have we lost plenty of recruits that we had longer relationships with? Yes.

Case by case. Each recruitment is unique.

The bold area above says it all..................BU is smart enough and has recruiting percolating so well that OUR time is precious and we have many irons in the recruiting fire......WE are not chopped liver anymore in the recruiting circles , but becoming a choice cut of prime USDA recruiting beef....
let the blue bloods beware of the ORANGE BLOOD and fear the

Exactly. They don't just throw offers out there just for fun. There's a reason they've entered this recruitment, and its not because they just became aware of him.

Most likely we have some connection/relation with the kid. Strong reputation and NIL might help us win the battle. It just won't be an easy one, probably harder than most of the recruit games we have had so far.

The staff has made it obvious that they live and breathe this stuff and have been relatively successful, so they definitely deserve the benefit of the doubt.

With the transfer portal I wouldn't be shocked if the approach becomes full court press on anyone they believe to be a top 50 fit and rely on the portal to get Soph-Senior further developed 50-150 kids.

His comments about Illinois don't exactly inspire confidence. His comments about Nebraska seemed more generous than his Illinois ones. But it's early and maybe someone else read those comments completely differently than I.
Okay, I just went back to double check the comments to make sure I read them correctly and couldn't find them. Did I imagine it all?

I think this over simplifies things.

Kentucky has demonstrated how hard it is to piece together a championship team with parts that haven't been working together over time.

I believe the best teams are going to have a core of players that have been with the program 2-3 years and then supplement with some transfers.

Time will tell of course.
There is no doubt that is true - it's really rare to win a national title just with super talented freshman, but the national title winners in recent years have all been the top recruiting schools - Kansas, North Carolina, Baylor, Villanova a couple of times, Duke, Louisville etc. - you just need enough guys to stick around so you have experience and talent.

My point is, I do think the difference in the "haves" group will narrow and help schools like us - the top recruiting schools will take fewer HS kids in favor of proven transfers leaving more 4 and 5 star kids for the next tier down. Who it helps through will be schools like us being able to compete with the top recruiting schools because of transfers- a broader talent pool now coming to the "haves" and the blue bloods can't take them all. Scouting and identifying the right talent from other schools becomes even more critical - hopefully that plays in our favor as well

My two cents...... As a fan I love to be in on the top guys in the country. Would love to be like a Duke or Kentucky that might end up some years with 2-4 guys out of the top 10. But, it is extremely rare and almost impossible to win with those guys if that is most of your roster. Those guys are almost guaranteed to be there for only 1 year. You need upper classman to be successful and play for it all in March. I think the tournament has played out that way for quite a while with a few exceptions. I think Brad Underwood also realizes you need guys who stick around the program for 3-4 years. That is why at this point I am thrilled with getting commits from guys in the 50 - 100 range that will be here for a little bit. Then, throw in some upper classman transfers as well that can maybe put you over the top. I like that strategy better and think it ultimately leads Illinois to a Final Four spot in the next 5 years.

I am not going to worry about too many 5 stars until we get there. One or two 5 stars on our roster? Definitely possible. Four or five? We are not there yet.

The thing we really need to find out is whether we can integrate 2-3 transfers and win consistently enough (esp. in the tourney.) They are like the 5 stars in a sense that they will only stay 1-2 years but their maturity is higher. So the volatility from transfers is probably not as bad as five stars. (Also we probably won't start a transfer All Star team with four to five transfers.)

True, but the beloved seems to be doing pretty well lately😏

Last year we had 2 starting level bigs/inside players - Kofi and Coleman. BBV and Brandon L were only used as last resort

This year we will have Dainja, Coleman, Matt M, Rogers. Plus Zacharie and Brandon L

Next year will now have Amani coming.

I like how Brad identified a weakness in our program and is addressing it!

The Elohim offer is very interesting.

I think we all have faith in the staff so hearing any potential backstory from the insiders on here will be insightful. Any context of a prior relationship or connection will clarify a lot. Either way - love that we are going for a guy like that and this staff doesnt seem to take too many shots in the dark so who knows..

There's no reason to overthink it, we offer a lot of kids that never come to Champaign. Just trust the process, if there is a genuine interest we will see that develop and end up in a top something or other list. If not, best of luck to him wherever he goes.

Rodgers is more of a 3/2/1 than a 4/5.

There’s a chance Perrin won’t be here until second semester. Depends on the red tape.

I definitely agree with your way of thinking. So for every HS recruit early in the process, my attitude is: we shall see.

Rather than rush him into classes two weeks behind, a second semester start might be a good thing. Kinda of like early enrollment for football. Not like he is critical to success this season, but he may be just the glue guy next year...especially with a 10 months to get to know the school, the team, the coaches, and the B1G game.

That said, from video and comments, I really like this guy....looks like he has a great future as a B1G warrior.

In terms of his development the sooner he’s on campus the better. If you think saving some eligibility is a positive, I’d wager he doesn’t make it through 4 years here. If you think we’d be rushing him, I’d argue the coaching staff isn’t going to play him in any thing other than garbage time if they don’t think he’s ready.

If he doesn’t come until second semester so be it. Not the end of the world. But if you have a choice of bringing him in ASAP you do that 100/100 times.

I'd say he's more of a 3/4. But obviously he's versatile. I wouldn't consider him a "big," but wouldn't consider him a guard either.
